I thought Greg Rutherford was a cool loser but he said he should have won after finishing third.. its a dual climate thing. I thought we would have won in the womens eight cox, it’s a shame the U.S beat us by a short metre.
At least one good thing from the mens cox eight come out of it, and that’s they’ve retained their title as well as the cox four and the womens skulls 2 in the rowing. Our sport for Gold medals.

I don't know about the women's boxing this year, hoping Nicola Adams will come back fighting for a win again.
Christine Ohuruogu is one of my fave 400 m runners too, in the semi's tomorrow.

Four U.S. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in thier taxi cab by fake cops

Rio Olympics Media Bus Hit By Gunfire

Quote:
a bullet hit the equestrian center, missing journalists there by just a few feet. That bullet was suspected to have been fired by a gang member trying to shoot down a police blimp or drone, officials said.

i've heard stories of brazilians from other parts of the country having a good and pleasant experience attending the events, with no hiccups and with a good impression overall. but that's only because they already know from tv how crazy and what type of crazy the city is...

...which is one of the reasons why it should never have been considered for an event of this kind

From what I know- Rio promised to treat the water much better than they did. If I remember the news story right- 8 treatment plants were supposed to be built, only one was. Most of the water is supposed to be treated- only about half is!

Then there is the crime that has been reported.

I'm sure at the time of picking Rio as the Olympics city.. they thought it was a good idea. However when the city is in this bad of shape, more should've been done or they cancel the Olympics. I realize cancelling it is pretty harsh- but people's health and safety are more important than sports, period.

Then there's the tv coverage of the Olympics that is crap (in USA at least, not sure if its this bad everywhere)- broadcasts on NBC are on tape delay, they have filler stuff between events, don't always show the full event, etc. So stupid.

Last but not least- Hope Solo is a sore loser and needs to grow up.

TV coverage here in the UK is brilliant. It is pretty much on for about 14 hours a day live on BBC with some great commentators and we'll known & informative former athletes as pundits. You can also watch every event as you press the red button and the list is there for you.

They only exposure I've gotten to it thus far is face-book....so far it looks like the 2016 drama games. People crying because a guy who's won multiple gold medals finally got beaten in his the competition he participated in, people deciding an athlete proposing to his girlfriend of six years on camera must have been some show of male dominance and meant to pressure her into saying yes. poor guy getting acused of being an abusive, manipulative, sexist for proposing to his girlfriend of 6 years...that is a long time.

Perhaps just watching on t.v isn't so toxic, but not much into sports anyways.

I haven't watched the Olympics in over 20 years. I haven't even owned a TV in the last 15 years. But that's pretty much exactly the way it was the last time I watched it. Those idiot talking heads blabbering on hour after hour from a studio newscast style with brief reports from the Olympics. It was the most boring s**t I have ever seen on TV, and that is saying a lot. Since I generally find TV to be boring.

I don't think NBC is paying for the rights to actually broadcast the games, so much as they are just paying to keep it off their competitors. That way they can broadcast their own show in that time period, without any competition to ruin the ratings.

I get why people think that this years Olympics in Rio is a disaster.. but there is no doubt that once a poor country like Rio has generated enough sales from the tourism, then some of that money can be returned to a continuing economy, if you get in alive and carry a pre med vaccination survival kit you're probably 'going for Gold' later.

You might want to look into what happens after cities are taken over by the olympics, the citizens don't see any of that money as far as I know. usually the areas go to ruins because it's too expensive to maintain all the Olympic buildings and such they leave behind. A lot of business sponsors and atheletes get a lot of money over a short period...but much of the time that doesn't translate into ongoing income for the city that hosted the olympics, there are some cases the buildings and sports arenas are re-purposed successfully but over-all doesn't seem to leave much benefit for the city of citizens.

I don't really know what you're buffering on about, the Games are still going to generate enough profit for the economy whilst the whole country, is dependant on the resources it receives in welcome donations from places like yours, which are closer to provide the food aid and safe water banks.

Like all European countries which are bathed in poverty, either by the government, the wealthy or something else.

Money is like organ donors, you can't live with or without it.
If poorer countries wanted to change their culture to live in a democracy like ours, they still wouldn't respect the values of it.
There are always tensions in society and you are either going to suffer death threats, environmental or health problems.

All countries face some type of sinkhole in its lifetime. You can't change public sector spending cuts any more than swapping third world aid for peace.

It's also unfortunate that the proud and indigenous don't exist in our self-effacing society of today but based on the culture of the Amazonian tribes, I don't think they'd want to endure it any other way.

I strongly agree with Sweetleaf here. Empathy, have you actually looked up what happens to Olympic cities once the olympics are over??? Nearly all the buildings lay in ruins and there is rarely any indication the Olympics helped the city. IOC loves to claim "oh the Olympics help tourism and bring in huge revenues", but that's not really the case much. Revenue for a short time while Olympics is going on, then it dies out. The fancy stadiums will be unused (as others have in the past) and Rio will likely still struggle. Yes I do realize Olympics can't fix a broken city completely, but it certainly wont help much in the long run.

Rio wasnt prepared for the Olympics and its a mess. I hope some at IOC get what they deserve for this. There is no excuse for what happened, NONE! Rio being a mess isnt IOC's fault, however the IOC could've easily put more pressure on Rio to do things to fix up the city before the games. Or ask for more help! But they didn't. It's very sickening.

I think next time a city is in this bad of shape before the games (and no big changes have been done to fix it), they should cancel the Olympics. People will whine over the cancelling. However.. an unsafe city is no place for the Olympics ever. People's lives and safety are much much more important than holding the Olympics, period.

I notice a lot of athletes have fallen ill. Too many to name here, but you can google Rio + illness.

Here is one:

REVEALED: The terrifying illnesses awaiting athletes at Rio Olympics 2016

And then there's the diving pool:

Also, was I the only one waiting for Giselle Bundchen to fall during her incredibly long walk?

@empathy: lol wut?..

you've been watching too much tv. amazonian tribes in particular have next to nothing to do with rio, other than for the usual aesthetic themes of rio's carnival parades. and indigenous cultures in brazil are close to extinct

If they are going to continue with this nonsense, they should have permanent venues for it. Probably one in Greece, since thats where the Olympics originated, and maybe one in Switzerland for the Winter Olympics. Rather then continue to waste billions of dollars to build facilities for each game, only to abandon them afterwards.

Well, it also gave her the chance to reject him in just about the most publicly humiliating way possible :D

On the other hand, had she rejected him, I think millions of fans would hate her and she’d be in permanent danger of being killed or raped by them, so there probably was quite a lot of pressure indeed.
