incandescent lighting uses the bulk of the energy in a household, aside from large appliances that use an electric heating element (dryers, heaters, water heaters, dish washers)

No need to fear because in 9 years DR NT will have us all on a oneway railtrip in cattle cars.

I have found that CF bulbs make less heat. That can help with cooling in a hot climate. And use 13 watts to make as much light as a 60 watt bulb. Tryed the yellowish 3000K cf bulbs they give me a headache. Daylight ones at 6500K color temp works good for me.

Yeah, I believe in choice in this matter so long as people are willing to pay environmental premium for the costs imposed. The real problem is that people are never willing to bear the costs necessary to do this the efficient way so they have to have it fed to them in the inefficient way.

NOOOO!! !! It think I'll officially put my eyes out! I hate flourescent light. It drives my AS up the wall.

LEDs should be replacing CFLs in a few years anyway. That's why I am I not buying CFLs.

The mercury in those lights can't be that bad. It's probably a bunch of paranoia. I had a few 4ft lights break in my room (fell from the ceiling next to my bed) and I never got sick. But then, mercury is better know for long-term cancer than any short-term effects. I used to pick up pieces of them a lot when they were in the trash. Compare that to a tiny CFL. Unless the manufacuring process is different...



edit:I didn't read much about the mercury-cancer correlation. I just remembered hearing it somewhere. This is a list of health related problems.

They have mercury metal which is far less toxic and less absorbed than mercury compounds. Also mercury metal is fairly resistant to chemical reaction. Thus may rapidly diffuse to safe concentrations before it has a chance to become a more toxic derivative. Though its certainly not safe as we locked only two things up in the lab I worked in non-denatured ethanol and mercury metal.

Actually, mercury is dangerous in two forms: Compounds and Vapor. The actual metal is FAIRLY safe. The best advice to give when a tube breaks is to evacuate the room after opening a window. A fan doesn't hurt either. I personally hate when they break, mostly because they tend to "grenade." Oh, and ballast technology has improved beyond the magnetic ballast, both eliminating the flicker associated with fluorescent lights, as well as reducing electrical costs.
