He gets termed out in a few years. I expect him to change the Russian Const. so that he can stay in office as long as he likes.

He is popular, but only in the ethnic Russian circles. Russia included allot of ethnic groups.

It would be good if Britain could be run by a native Briton who put his own people first.

There aren't really any 'native' Britons. We could do with a proper political system and not the centrist mishmash we have now though. I'm voting UKIP next time. ;)

Do you think Tony Blair is an Aspie? He always seems to have a silly and inappropriate grin on his face :?

maybe someone could start another "do you think he is an aspie" topic

Everyone has an inner Aspie, waiting to break free.
Even Tony Blair. :)

As has been said, I don't think Tony Blair is evil, but the emergence of the '1984' society is damaging.

You've now got to give your name and address in the UK when you buy a TV. The person at the TV shop then feeds it into a computer and you get a letter after a week saying: "you recently bought a TV at this shop". You then have to pay over £100 for a TV licence!

And they say paranoia is a bad thing.

But we have no adverts on the BBC.
I don't see how this is a '1984 society.' It's not like the government or installing cameras inside our homes or anything. I'd much rather live here than most places in the world.

It looks worrying when you link things up. Some of the law changes give the law enforcement services sometimes blanket powers to do as they wish. Really, it depends on if you always trust the people who run our country to be benign.

But adverts can be fun sometimes!

I'm not saying this isn't a decent place to live, or that other places are better. It's just that it seems the apparatus is in place for anyone who is evil and in a position of power to get all the information they want about people. TV licences, ID cards, CCTV - there's a heck of a lot of information about everyone out there.

I'm just saying that while some is necassary to have, there's a lot that isn't.

Oh I thought Blair was doomed since the Iraq invasion. I'm an American, but I was living in Wales then. It was at that point I started telling people I was Canadian if they asked. He's been seen as Bush's lapdog. Since Bush is the worst president in anyone's memory over here (yet we reelected him! Its our own faults, stupid Americans), that was not a smart political relationship.

If you are worried about the tv liscense (they aren't that bad) then buy a used tv.
Over here I think its worse. They were keeping phone records on every single person. They want to introduce a new law making "attempted copywrite infringment" a crime. No one even knows what that is, but it would let them get wire taps and so forth more easily, etc. People are getting uptight about border security  and other things. Sometimes I try to convince my husband that it would fun to emigrate after I finish grad school.
