The type of protest this covers are those that do property damage and/or pose a public safety issue, not any and all protests. It probably won't go through, anyway. People really need to get hold of themselves over this Trump thing, he's still two months and change from even taking office.

I'm confused about the nature of this so called bill then. Isn't it already illegal to do property damage/be a public safety issue, as it should be anyways.

the only downside to trump getting impeached is he will be replaced by pence the pill who is WORSE, and if pence in turn goes away then it'll be speaker ryan who is worse YET. it is a cascade of nasty.

If this is about stopping people protesting on highways, then GOOD. It's not safe for them, and it's not safe for drivers. There are plenty of places to protest that don't endanger lives.

the authoritarian mindset of POS pols like this one, of "this is the way it'll be, now shut up!" is what revolutions are made of. he may not be smart enough to understand that when you make peaceful protest impossible, you make riots inevitable. and to defenders of the bill, a retort is that the wording of the bill does not make exceptions for peaceful protest or describes in sufficient detail what protests are acceptable. ANYBODY can sue for "economic damages" over any kind of demonstration. it is a sneaky attempt at censorship.

It's just to augment the punishment for laws that already exist. Stuff I would have figured was a class A felony already. But I guess anything the republicans do is going to be viewed as putting everyone in prisons and death camps etc. We must be in a constant state of fear and panic.

If this blithering idiot can stay in office and get reelected, Trump isn't going anywhere.

Title of thread is misleading, it should be something like Senator Proposes bill increasing penalties for illegal protests. That said I more than understand the difficulty in writing titles with such a strict character limit.

This might end up in the Supreme Court. Even an uber conservative Trump court might rule against this. Trump's list of potential SCOTUS nominees have been rated very conservative but very qualified. Conservative justices rained in some of Bush's excesses.

They could just make it a felony to destroy any property or to block any emergency vehicle. I feel like that would be reasonable.

Dude its not that he isnt Obama, and its not that he's a Republican, its that he 's Trump. He's at least as much a nightmare for Republicans as he is for Democrats. If not more so.

Any legislation banning peaceful assembly to petition the government for redress of grievance is prohibited to Congress by the first Amendment and to the States by the 14 th Amendment. The GOP legislator ought to read the Constitution, in particular the Bill of Rights.

He and Dan Quaile were rather harmless despite being loopy. Although poorer residents of New Orleans might still have a bone to pick with his administration

Absolutely true. And if this travesty gets turned into law, we'll know for sure that our Republic is in jeopardy.

Bush got reelected for a second term only because he was fortunate for the unprovoked attack by Bin Laden and company to happen under his watch. Let's hope and pray that orange Mussolini doesn't get so lucky.
