As much as I despise Trump, the fact is, American government has proven to be so stable for two hundred plus years because of a smooth and peaceful transfer of power with every newly elected President. Trump is only going to be in for four years, then Martin Sheen and all those other celebrities can have their last laugh.

22 states have laws which penalize "faithless" electors. There have been a very few incidents of "faithless" election. I am certain that at the end of business the day after tomorrow, Donald Trump will be duly elected by the Electoral College. But assume the elector revolt and no candidate receives the necessary 270 electoral votes. Then the election will be thrown into the House of Representatives which is Republican controlled and Trump would be most likely elected by the House. So the outcome would be the same.

I agree.

I shouldn't have singled out Sheen. There were several washed up actors in that video.

...You didn't really just describe Martin Sheen as "Charlie Sheen's washed up dad," did you? Martin Sheen is one of the most significant actors in the history of American cinema.

Ezra you must be wary of describing people as "washed up."

How do you feel about the great Kirk Douglas? Would you describe him thus when this 100 y/o actor has made one of the most valuable contributions to US and world cinema, just because he's now old?

Charlie himself can possible be described as somewhat washed up at the moment (as can several others whom fame has ruined) but not his dad!

I looked up who was in that video. As I originally said, I had gotten that description from looking it up. I don't recall being familiar with the term washed up, outside of that description.

I had no idea people would get so deeply hurt and offended over something said about some movie star. I really had no idea you all love him so much and so I'm sorry. Actually I think it's kinda silly , but I'll still apologize.

BTW to whomever, if I say something that bothers you, you can just let me know in a casual way. The whole lecturing and finger wagging routine is only going to trigger a negative response from me.

Martin Sheen has been in his share of bad movies; I think your comment bothered me not because of who it was directed at, but because of your use of the "washed up" phrase. It is easy for young people to dismiss the aging. They are unfamiliar with the person's contributions and are not interested in learning about them. Earlier in some thread you accused me of ageism. I could turn around and do the same to you here.

In general I think western civilization has lost respect for not only it elders, but for the civilization itself. The government, the media both are now against us if you believe the New American Order. It's easy to throw out the old, but what will you replace it with?

LOLOLOL You're KILLIN' me, kid!!

I really don't see what the problem is----I mean, "washed-up" is subjective, isn't it; and, I have a feeling that if someone older would've said the exact same thing, that person would NOT have had anything said to them. I've been quite surprised at the responses to what you've said. Here's the way I look at it.....

If you were someone who was ALWAYS disrespectful to people older than you, then I could understand the responses----but, you're NOT! IMO, you have proven yourself, time-and-again, to be a mature / thinking individual (more mature / thinking than alot of adults on here, IMO), and so I consider the WHOLE being, when a comment is made----and, as you can see, I got a good laugh out of it----but, as I learned a lonnnnng time ago, when someone sees what they consider the slightest little faux pas, it doesn't matter how long / well one has been proving themselves; and, quite frankly, it seems to happen to the most impressive people, the most often.

Bottom Line: There's NO rule against saying an actor (or, any other public figure), is washed-up!

Martin Sheen was incredible in Apocalypse Now,one of the most intense and memorable films ever. The majority of actors will never have the chance or talent to appear in a film like that.Captures Heart of Darkness perfectly.
I never saw the tv show with him.Sounded boring to me.
Once people make a political statement it's ok to mock them.Whether or not he's washed up is just a matter of opnion.I have no idea, haven't seen anything recent of his.

Sooooooo in my experience "washed up" when used to describe an actor or actress wasn't ever used to exclaim how poor an actor or actress was. No, not at all. What it was used for was to describe an actor or actress who (for their own business reasons, not all necessarily based on a person's age) the movie studios have not decided to cast in new productions. Maybe a fan or two could tell us when this actor was last busy making films? Newer/younger populations are interested more in people their own age...this is why the average actor or actress becomes "washed up" (an unfortunate, but time honored, term).

And you ask: "It's easy to throw out the old, but what will you replace it with? I'm not sure, but it always seems to take care of itself.

Imagine how great our civilization could be if we actually valued what we created. But we are a throwaway culture. Each generation sure that it is the most important. And when they realize they are not, they have children because, surely, their children are the most important. It's sad to see how people keep repeating the same error even when they face of endless disappointment.

I don't think most people responded to what you said about Martin Sheen because they were offended... or at least I didn't. We responded the way we did because dismissing him like that strikes everyone as absurd, and suggests a possible lack of familiarity with cinema. It'd be like calling Stephen King a "washed up" author who's nothing more than somebody's dad, or Paul McCartney a "washed up" musician. I also don't think people should be too concerned about getting a negative response.

It's ironic for you to mock people for being offended when in the same post you effectively plead with them to not hurt your feelings, lest they get "negative reactions". We all say things that are a little off now and then. It's an important skill to learn to handle those situations with grace.

If you want to get some idea of who Martin Sheen is, I recommend you watch Apocalypse Now.

You have to remember that a lot of people have grown up with these "actors" pumping propaganda into them which has helped form their views.

It's self-evident that the current generation is different

From the 1900s onward their has been a steady erosion of traditional values as people moved from their traditional homes into cities. The first casualty is extended family, religious belief and cultural belief. Corporatisation of the western world has seen family values replaced by cultural characteristics such as materialism or individualism that have an important impact on psychosocial factors such as lack of social support and issues outside of their personal control such as socioeconomic inequality.

There is a relationship between income inequality and social affiliation, suggest there is a growth in the ‘culture of inequality’ that is more aggressive, less connected, more violent and less trusting. We are essentially a nation of mercenaries. Any wonder we throw away our previous generation's culture.
