The current conditions has little precedence where you have millions marching across capital cities in the US in response to the inauguration of a US president. My guess is the police are in damage control and trying to minimise publicity from journalists that they deem promote or publicise the protests in a positive light.

Arresting journalists on (if you'll pardon the expression) trumped up charges has never been a way to minimize publicity. Whatever their thinking this was a dumb move.

It's not trumped up charges, are activist reporters embedded with this riot not part of it? Even the ones that are legit got caught understandably in the sweep. The people rioting need to be held accountable more than these so called journalists need free reign to do whatever they want. Maybe when cops tell you to disperse you should disperse. I'm glad they confiscated the phones and cameras, I'm sure it would interesting to see what they documented.

How will we get "true," rather than "fake" news of a riot....if there are no reporters embedded with the rioters?

Just being an "activist" journalist doesn't make someone subject to arrests.

There are "activists" who support Trump, it should be noted.

No, journalists are not "activist reporters" and walking in the general vicinity of people while filming them is not participating in their acts.

You don't have to wait to see some of their footage -- it's already on RT.

It's really bad not to be able to "see the forest for the trees."

If the 'journalist' is associated with the group and was there to document their crimes then they are part of the riot in my opinion. These people were walking en masse dressed in all black with the faces covered and what they were doing was running in out of the crowd to smash and vandalize stuff so this entire mob shares responsibility. Someone organized this, someone paid money to do it, I think everyone involved should be held responsible. Everyone dress like that, that didn't disperse, should be charged.

Suppose the journalist (not in quotes) had to paint his face so he/she wouldn't stand out?

They'll get to the bottom of this. I'm almost sure their cases will be dismissed.

I would not believe that is a journalist then, I think the legitimate press credentialed people will have the charges dropped but if they were dressed in all black and participating then they should be charged like everyone else. The problem with these so called protests are there are more 'journalists' than protesters more times than not and there comes a point where the notoriety they give these people that is egging them on.

The prosecutors and police will get to the bottom of this.

I hate rioting, perhaps, even more than you hate rioting. I believe anybody who damages property, and assaults people, should have a one-way ticket to jail.

From what I read, these were legit journalist who were caught in the crossfire.

If they're legit then I am sure things will be straightened out, part of it is too I think that these rioters need to be made an example of since not only were they being violent and destructive they were trying to interfere with our democracy by interrupting the inaugural parade. There was premeditation on these people's parts, it was a criminal conspiracy and their disguises are evidence of what they planned on doing. I don't think some stupid 19 year old should spend 10 year in prison over it but maybe that rich financier and organizer should since they are the one most responsible.

Not really given their (police) actions will be perceived by the Trump administration as "proactive" despite the obvious signs they are silencing the free press (which "aint" democracy).

I am worried about Trump's attitude towards those in the Press who are "against" him.

I think we all have reason to fear the erosion of our liberties, starting with cracking down on the press, all to the howls and cheers of the Trumpanzees. How soon till reporters are waterboarded? How soon will that happen to Aspies on WP critical of the American Il Duce?

It's just a little bit unlikely that they were arrested under the orders of the President.
Really, is this how it's gonna be the next 4 (or 8) years when anything bad happens it's automatically Trump's fault?
