It's not good for Trump. But are there are any presidents in modern times that don't have some conflict like this on their record?

Its hard for me to believe that Obama deliberately wanted Trump to embarrass himself and at the same time was willing to risk the lives of military and innocent as a result.
Could be he didn't want to end his presidency with a major catastrophe.

Maybe Obama wouldn't have gone through with it, were it still on his watch.

Maybe. Droning under Obama cast a shadow on the administration to say the least. The media didn't pick up on it at the level of other conflicts like Benghazi. But at least the government was transparent about it.

Drones are only the latest improvement of the proverbial mousetrap. They probably said the same about the Gattling gun in the mid-late 19th century.
And so it goes...

Nothing like it. It's trial by the crooks in Washington and then blown away along with the people are surroundings in the area.

The aim was to gather intel.

They killed 14 militants and gathered intel.

In this sense, it was militarily successful.

PS I'm not saying I personally believe it was successful or otherwise. But it did, militarily, achieve its desired aims.

Even if the mission objective have been reached, from a strategic standpoint it's a disaster.

They would have had the element of surprise if it was approved by Obama. Maybe even if it was approved by Clinton. I'm sure that none of the bad guys slept very well on the first moonless night of the Trump administration. They aren't stupid. When you collect intel you have no idea when it will be used.

Thank you for this response. I think these practices hurt all Americans morally, which ends up hurting us in all sorts of ways we can't even imagine. I hope we can finally end this madness and seek reconciliation and contrition.
