Globe & Mail: Fearing Trump, asylum seekers travel across U.S.-Canada border, regardless of risks Les Perreaux PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. — The Globe and Mail Published Monday, Feb. 20, 2017 5:29PM EST

Quote:
Migrants from Nigeria, Colombia, Yemen, Eritrea, Sudan, Syria and parts of Eastern Europe have made their way to Quebec in recent weeks. They use unofficial crossings because, under the Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, migrants who have landed in either country are automatically turned away from seeking refuge in the other at official entry points. Once they set foot across the border at unauthorized crossings, they have the right to make a claim.

There’s no law to stop a person legally in the United States from leaving the country. On the Canadian side, it’s illegal to make an unauthorized entry but there is nothing Canadian police can do to stop a person from stepping over the boundary into arrest.

It's probably (at least) almost as difficult to get permanent residence in Canada as it is to get it in the US.

I doubt it that Canadian authorities think the situation with Trump is dire enough for them to consider these people "asylum seekers." The situation just isn't as dire as it is in, say, Syria.

People who renounce American citizen because of Trump....just are not thinking properly, in my view.

I happen to like Canada.

In reality, though, unless I married somebody there, or had family there, it would be very difficult for me to get citizenship or permanent residence there. I don't have a "useful skill."

I actually looked into it. Not because of Trump.

If I got my Masters in something like social work---maybe.

If you're not at least slightly worried about a civil war or World War III in the next two/four years, then I honestly feel like you're not paying attention.

I've been paying close attention. I wouldn't say that I'm "totally" not worried about the possibility of civil war or of World III. But I highly doubt either will occur.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be vigilant. We were LOTS closer to nuclear during the Cuban Missile Crisis than we are now. Right now, we have to be careful--but we're not in imminent danger of nuclear war, or of a civil war within the US.

Yes, you have Iran, etc. Yes, we have to be cautious and vigilant at the same time.

What I'm saying it's not in most people's interest in the US to have a civil war. We're not in the state that Syria was in just prior to their civil war. Or the Congo. Or Angola. We are still quite a viable nation, despite our political differences.

People protested the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Some of them were violent. Some of them advocated violent overthrow. We haven't even gotten to THAT point. Trump incites passions, like the Vietnam War incited passions. But most people just aren't that foolish.

What caused the Civil War from 1861-1865 was a series of unique circumstances. States seceding, an attack on Fort Sumter, etc.

Most people aren't these people on YouTube ranting away. Or those "anarchists" protesting and rioting. We had MUCH WORSE rioting in the 1960s.

If that were true, then the United States would have had a civil war after the failed Business Coup of 1933 (a more likely scenario for that event). Americans are slow to anger, but we do have plenty of relatively brief "riots" (labor unions, racial and student protests among others like the Cuban Missile Crisis kraftiekortie described) not civil wars.

That's a good question.

And I think the United States should likewise be just as strict of people wanting to take advantage of the welfare system etc.

Edit: The article says they were 10 people from Turkey and Sudan, and they we're crossing over from New York State into Quebec.

I've also heard Australia is strict for similar reasons, but apparently they don't have as much of an immigration problem considering everything there is trying to kill and eat you.

The critters here are not that bad when you live in the cities. If you are an illegal immigrant travelling on a rickety boat then the crocs and sharks are a problem if you fall overboard

Civil strife in America....very possible (not inevitable). There could be "blood in streets'. But it would be a return to the 1960's, not a return to the EIGHTEEN Sixties when we had an actual military civil war.

World War Three IS something to worry about. We are definitely sliding back into a second Cold War. And need to watch our steps in dealing with resurgent Russia and emergent China. And regional general war in the middle east between the local heavy weights (Iran and Saudi Arabia) and their respective allies could break out- and could draw the outside global powers in.

Yeah I get them in our nearby park where I live. They are quite tame and frankly there are so many that even my daughter doesn't look twice when she sees them.

I can't say anything about the US but people can say anything they want about Canada. "Canada is sooo weird because they spell color with a U and use the metric system, their money looks like the Monopoly money, and they're a bunch of commies with their free health care and it's cold and freezing ALL the time and BLA BLA BLA".

Someone on YouTube even said the other day that Canada is full of SJWs. I'm not even sure what a Social Justice Warrior is, but naturally it's bad. :(

I worked with a Canadian.

He was so envious of me, that I didn't get socked with all those Canadian taxes.

Yeah much better to have a collapsing infrastructure and no health care.

We have sucky health care.

Our infrastructure is really pretty good. With some faults----like everywhere has faults.

In some places, it suffers from lack of maintenance.

But to call it "collapsing" would be hyperbole.
