Yeah basically. It'll also be the only productive work that they do. I cant wait to hear the epic three party harmony whining when they find out that they can't have skinny soy lattes out in the field, and the butterbeans fed to them have ham hocks in them.

Probably the usual, IE, robbery, theft, auto theft, carjacking, B&E, assault, major vandalism, drug dealing, criminal threatening, possession of unregistered firearms, drug possession, OUI/DUI, etc. --lots of things can put them there, but you can definately count on bad decisions made on their part.

I've thought about putting in a small garden. Even though this is the suburbs a few people have small gardens out of sight in thier back yards. I'd at least want corn, 'maters, and pole beans. Keeping the dog out of it could be an issue unless I go out with him each time. It wouldnt be worth it if I had to put up a fence tall enough to keep him out. I guess if I beat him hard enough the first time that could do the trick...

A "what if" scenario. At the time (at the height of the war in 42), the forces of Imperial Japan were already over-extended. They were still bogged down in China, with most of their army there, and this was a real drain on their resources, having begun this conflict in 1937 (before the start of World War 2) with no favourable resolution in sight. Whilst an invasion of Australia was certainly possible, they would not have been able to occupy it - it's just too big.
In any case, I am talking about reducing your "defence" budget now. Did you know that prior to World War 2 the United States had a smaller army than that of Portugal? You got along just fine with such small forces, so why can't it be done now? Just think of all the money you'll save.
