The actor who played Bulldog the soprts guy is slso gay. He said he hung out in sports bars to do research on how to act like a macho stright guy.

Exactly. It might cross a viewer's mind to think that Niles might be gay. But their dad was a totally convincing garden variety American blue collar retired cop, and family man, whom you would never guess was played by a British gay guy.
