It’s selective condemnation. We have tons of movies and TV shows about people who have actually been convicted of things far more vile and horrid than what MJ was merely accused of, and they still freely air.
This is similar to the Apu situation in that one stereotype about one group was singled out for scrutiny. Hari K believed that South Asians were more offended by “Thank you, come again” than the post-9/11 witch hunts against those who “looked Muslim”.
It also reminds me of when some peoples’ condemnations of terrorism hinges on whether the perpetrators were Islamic jihadists, white nationalists or incels.
