Let's not forget that Louisiana seriously considered a grand wizard of the KKK (David Duke) as recently as 1992. Strom Thurmond was supported by people in North Carolina from 1924 to 1964 on a platform of segregation.
The white voting public in these states are the ones who need to have their heads examined. It's a little like how Germany got a free pass after WWII because a handful of Nazis were blamed and the millions of Germans who happily participated in lifting the Nazis to power and participated in genocide had a bout of amnesia when confronted about what happened in the 1930s and 1940s.
