The fact that it happens at all is sad. I'm not excusing racism though, I wish that Georgia was more tolerant.

They don’t hang out with very many actual people.

That's a gross over generalization. Shıt happens. Read the article referenced by the OP.

It's not just Georgia. You just happen to live there. It's the whole Western world. Europe and anywhere else Europeans have settled and become the predominant culture.

Well the whole American south gets to be the scapegoat for all the racism in the USA because of the whole slavery thing. But like I said, white-shaming ain't going to solve the issues of racism. If anything it makes racism worse.

I only encounter “check your privilege” amongst folks in academic settings.

People in the everyday world have no time for this ideologically-based stuff.

I don’t dispute that racism exists, and that white people tend to have a better time of it in a US context. This is plainly obvious.

But “white privilege” is a concept borne of gross generalizations.

I don't think white shaming is thing, except possibly as a dog whistle for YouTube pundits who try to further the aims of populist politicians. But then I don't come into much contact with academicians, at least not that sort. Some of them may be a bit extreme in their approach, but they certainly aren't unique in that regard.

White privilege is very much a thing. I wouldn't have the comfortable life style I enjoy today if it weren't for white privilege.

Maybe you...and somewhat me....but many white people are not “privileged” in the least.

Many more people of color have entered the middle classes.

Please don’t put me in a narrow category.

I understand that, in some ways, I have been “privileged”—but in many other ways, I’ve had to work hard and struggle.

This is what makes this such a complicated topic to give fair treatment to, and why the pronouncements of demagogues are often heard most clearly. Many books have been written to address the topic in depth, I for one am guilty of not having read many recently (I spend too much of my time reading fiction) however you could probably start with something by Ta-Nehisi Coates if you're interested and want to read something current. As should I.

Yeah it was way easier back in the day when the "for rent" notices in the Classified section of the paper were organized by "white" and "colored".

I believe much more needs to be done to get rid of entrenched de facto racism....but I don’t believe an assumption of “white privilege” will find many adherents.

De facto racism remains entrenched in some souls—but there are many who acknowledge the past, yet look into the future.

Yeah...but I don’t actually encounter much “white shaming.”

I encounter “white privilege”—but not as universal as some people believe it is.

I've encountered both.

Any time I was called a redneck, hillbilly, or a hick, or accused of being a racist simply because of the region I was born in. I believe that is an example of white-shaming.

As for white privilage, anytime I was brought to a crisis center the cops who took me there were always super nice to me. I think we all know why that is... if my skin were darker they wouldn't have been as friendly towards me.

I was also once called a white supremacist by a bunch of weeaboos on the internet simply because I did not hate a Japanese video game that had American characters in it (Siren Blood Curse).

That is a prime example of white shaming imho.

Oh and I was once called an anti-semite just because I said I didn't like the way Israel treats the Palestinians.

You get most of this crap from people on the Internet who have nothing better to do.

True, but I think it still counts.
