The law does not guarantee Autistics will get an education

My family that lives there told me, Republicans don't expand Medicaid, because it encourages poor people to move to another state.

The charter schools do not have to accept students with any disabilities. They are allowed to define what kind of school it is, and that can exclude children with disabilities.

But public schools can’t do that. Am I correct in this?

Correct.

However, rural public schools have been known to avoid diagnosing autism so they don't have to provide autism specific services. They just get lumped with ID. If the parents are uneducated, it slips through.

I thought public schools were not allowed to turn kids with disabilities away unless the kid poses a danger to other kids or there disability is so severe they cannot provide a learning environment for them? Only private schools can turn kids away.

^^^ what you say is true, but there are work arounds. Only smart parents with enough money for a lawyer can really get what is needed in Florida.

My grandbaby with autism is doing great in Jax. They send a special bus just for her. And she's thriving. I don't know, but I'm wondering if the 1 on 1 thing is the sticking point? That's kinda hard to accommodate. Could my granddaughter benefit from 1 on 1? Sure... What kid couldn't? What we've found out this year is that although she's essentially non-verbal with regard to seeking out social discourse, she's been absorbing the information all along. When we thought she was just spinning in circles to 'stim,' she was listening. If asked to count, she does. Then she will pick out the number that goes with what she's counted and stick it in the answer box.

How old is she?

My brother happens to live in Ponte Vedra, which is just south of Jax.

She's six. I know that area well, very posh.

He moved there for tax reasons.

I should have qualified the last statement. It doesn't happen all the time. It happens more in rural areas. I've heard Jax is better. Ive been involved in several fights with the school systems regarding FAPE for students with autism. Persephone, I am glad you're children are getting what they need.

There's a famous vlog about a nonverbal autistic girl who lives in the Jax area. Her name is Abigal, Abby for short. She's about 14-15 years old now. If only he didn't have so many subscribers...he could be an excellent source of knowledge about how special ed works in Florida.

Of course, in conjunction with BlazingStar, who also is an excellent source of knowledge.

Cool! She goes to Crystal Springs and although she is in a class with others, she was given an assessment and her grade was upped to 1st grade, from Kindergarten after about a week of being there. She was not in a special school before, they were not able to provide the sort of education geared for her. This year, she's doing great. I think they didn't have time to do these special non-verbal tests. It's so good to know she's somewhere where they are expecting things of her and she's delivering in her own way.

I'm glad for this. I like stories of optimism like that.

I bet, with the right guidance, that she'll thrive and be some sort of genius.

For her birthday this year, I got her a Newton's cradle and a intricate ball bearing puzzle. She loves stuff like that, she's very intense. I was just talking to her dad, he says there's also another big autism school in Jax, but you have to apply and pay. I've never heard of that. Maybe it's one of the charter schools they mentioned?

The father should make sure they emphasize academics, as well as more "vocational" sorts of curricula. I'm sure it's a really good school.

I know, in NYC special ed, that academics tends not to be emphasized----because of the sheer number of kids and the burnout of teachers. I observed a few of these classes when I was an undergrad speech pathology student.
