the murders are horrible.

But the only reason it made the news is because they are white and, apparently US citizens. Mexicans are murdered like this frequently and we don't even notice.

They are technically a fundamentalist sect of Mormonism, so they ARE Mormons.

Any sort of fundamentalism has complex problems.

It’s not nice to murder fundamentalist Mormons, either. Even annoying people don’t deserve to be murdered. I speak with the authority of having been an annoying person. Eh, I’m still annoying, but I’m no longer religious.

Are you saying that you think that they were killed because they were annoying?

It was more that they were Americans than that they were white...to me.

That’s why it was more publicized.

No, I’m saying regardless of what their religious persuasion is murder isn’t nice.

I feel for these people. As a former Jehovah’s Witness, I often view Mormons as my cult cousins. I can relate to them on many levels.

Sure, it’s obnoxious to go to culturally diverse countries as missionaries to try to convert the local “heathens,” but they were just doing what they thought they were supposed to do. You can’t fault them too much for that.

They probably view these murders as religious persecution. (JWs certainly would)

I don’t blame Mexico for this devastating crime (although they do need to work on lowering their crime rates but they need money to do so). It could’ve happened just about anywhere. People are people no matter where you live.

Mormons have been living in Mexico for ages, dating back to when the LDS church ceased to condone polygamy in order to secure statehood for Utah, with lots of dissenters leaving for Mexico.

That’s what I thought.

They had dual US/Mexican citizenship. This would’ve made the news no matter what their religion was.

They are Mormons, they're just not members of the Church of Jesus Christ and Later-Day Saints. LDS, along with the various sects that have split off but continue to use the teachings of Joseph Smith and continue to use the Book of Mormon all qualify as Mormons in general usage.

The Book of Mormon is on my reading list. I’m saving it for when I’m in the mood for something silly.

Mexican officials believe the women and children were killed after being caught up in a dispute between local drug cartels battling for control of the area.

So the police chief killed the Mormons because the Mormons were opposed to the drug cartels? So basically the police chief was helping the drug cartels.

Thanks! I didn’t have one.

I’m reading the Qu’ran first which is not funny... Well, it would be funny in a dark humor sort of way if it wasn’t actually something that people believed in.

There are a lot of Book of Mormon in Las Vegas. In all the thrift stores and such. Where I'm at now too probably.

If they follow the Book of Mormon and think Joseph Smith is a prophet who translated golden plates given to him by the Angel Moroni into the BoM, then they are Mormons.
