The Aunt Jemima in the cartoon that Fnord posted hasn’t been used in quite a while.

The current AJ resembles Florence from “The Jeffersons”.

Replacing the image of one underpaid and exploited household servant with another is not social progress.

Nancy Green

Quote:
Nancy Green (November 17, 1834 – August 30, 1923) was a storyteller, cook, activist, and the first of several African-American models hired to promote a corporate trademark as "Aunt Jemima".

Nancy Green was born into slavery on November 17, 1834, near Mount Sterling in Montgomery County, Kentucky. She was hired in 1890 by the R.T. Davis Milling Company in St. Joseph, Missouri, to represent "Aunt Jemima", an advertising character named after a song from a minstrel show.

Green was one of the organizers of the Olivet Baptist Church. Her career allowed Green the financial freedom to become an activist and engage in antipoverty programs. She was one of the first African-American missionary workers. She used her stature as a spokesperson to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for individuals in Chicago.

Cancelled 2020. This is the type of mistake made when people base decisions on emotion and intimidation.

It is also happening to Uncle Ben's rice and Mrs. Butterworth. The classic pictures that we see on the labels of these products will be removed because some people find them racist. More and more companies are caving into PC culture. I don't see how any of the brands are racist. They just show black people in a positive light. The black people that are portrayed in the images of these products are associated with good food.

You don't see how depicting blacks as antebellum domestic servants might be problematic?

There were actresses who played Aunt Jemima in early TV commercials. My local news published a story from the family of one of the actresses. They said that they were proud of their cousin, and she herself had been proud to portray the character back then. They said there were few acting roles for women of color in her time, and the fact that she had an acting career was a big achievement.

I wish we could hear more from the historical point of view like that.

Most of the posts in this thread are perfect examples of systemic racism.

Funny that you mention that.

In the early two thousands there was a young Black woman in America who appeared on an open mic show on Comedy Central who had a whole routine about "the best way to defuse the N word is make it the name for a snack food", and she went into this dialogue about "WHAT? you're throwing a party and dont have n****rs? Everyone wants n****rs!".

Had both me, and the whole mixed race studio audience, in stitches. Of course only a Black person could get away with that, but still, it was hilarious.
