The man died fighting to free the slaves.  These people are the definition of :"Dickheads".
The more appropriate label is "Iconoclast".  People need more dynamic education and fewer static icons.
But you do agree that they are still "Dickheads, right?
No.  Ignorant and destructive, perhaps, but nothing profane.
But are they actually Iconoclasts? So are they about to tear down statues of Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X and MLK next?
One should hope so.  We need fewer inactive icons and more active participation in our democracy.  Let's stop placing more importance on dead marble, metal, and stone than we do on living, needy people.

How many people would be fed from today's cost of even one of those statues?  How many would receive medical treatment, education, housing, and clothing?

Elsewhere on this site is a person condemning the entire BLM movement because people of an entirely different ethnicity removed statues of his favorite "saint".  Why is there more concern about dead statuary than live people?

 Idolatry, plain and simple.

I take your point, but colour me doubtful.

Iconoclast? You would need people to be thinking let's destroy a symbolic icon ahead of time. This was pure reactive rage. Unlike other statue takedowns the motivation as such seems to be we saw other people do it on TV or on their phones, let's copy them. ”Dickheads” still works for me.

That is a fine argument against building new statues which is not what we are discussing.

Maintenance of these statues requires the employment of park service employees as long the statues are there. Cleaning up the statues remains after they were torn down requires the temporary use of municipal employees.

Who exactly is this "they" you refer to?  There are so many "theys" that it's hard to keep track.

I think it is a mostly NT thing.
Maybe some aspies are interested also, but I'm not one of them.

People like historical buildings, statues, etc because it gives them a feeling of "Permanency".

Personally, I can only envisage a dwarf red sun engulfing the earth in our future, so I see this nostalgic thinking as rather pedestrian.

So, basically I agree with you.

Heg sounds like a decent fellow.

They should re-erect his headless statue and charge the vandals for the cost.
