Washington Redskins reviewing name after advertiser pressure
These riots of the last month far exceed the Watts riots of the late 60's and Rodney King riots of the 90's.
I think we are in a new era
George Floyd riots estimated 25+ have died. 200 curfews issued, National Guard called out in 42 states, Protests in 2,000 cities and towns, 60+ countries
Watts riots 34 died
Rodney King Riots 63 died
Riots following the assassination of MLK over 100 cities 42 deaths
Long Hot Summer of 1967 159 riots 85+ deaths
New York City Draft riots 119-120 dead, deadliest single riot in U.S. history, arguably the second biggest insurrection against the U.S. outside of the Ciil War itself.
Vermont stated it in an obtuse bone-headed way. He should have known that the Watts riots, and Detroit, and the Rodney King riots, etc were all much more intense in loss of life and in property damage than the recent events- most of whichdont even count as "riots" at all, but as peaceful demonstrations. The recent "riots" are not worse as "riots", or even as bad.
But I get what Vermont means...that the mood of the country has shifted suddenly, and hugely, and maybe so far down the road that there is no turning back.

I remember from the long hot summer of ‘67 onward.
The George Floyd Protests(not just riots) as you can tell from the statistics are much much more widespread and have led to much more immediate change then the 20th century riots which makes sense in the social media era. The long term implications are unknown.
Backlash to 60s protests and riots changed history significantly in two ways. The killing and violence against civil rights protesters caused enough disgust to lead to the civil rights legislation. The counterculture as a whole lead to a conservative political backlash that lasted up until now. “Law and Order” and and “no nonsense” policing, tough sentencing in other words all that people are protesting against now stem out of the backlash to the sense of disorder from the 60s riots and the high crime rates that followed. It is fear of this backlash getting a renewed life that led in large part to Joe Biden’s nomination.
The reaction to the George Floyd murder did not happen in a vacuum. The current era of sustained protests in multiple locales began with “Occupy Wall Street” in 2011 and “Black Lives Matter” started in earnest with Ferguson during 2014. The push and success of tearing and taking down statues began in earnest in reaction to the white supremacist chuch massacre in 2015. Arguably it was the election and Presidency of Donald Trump that got a lot of white middle class people not thinking just that America is corrupt and in need of reform inherently but systematically evil in need of radical change. Riots immediately upon his election, the massive women’s march the day after his inauguration, Gen Z showed their ability to use social media to run circles around their elders with massive climate change and gun control protests. There is an argument to be made that the George Floyd riots, protests and ensuing immediate change would have happened sans Trump, social media would have shown police killings of black people until it reached some sort of tipping point, young people would have known how to organize instant protests etc but I do think the reaction to Trump is a big factor.
Regardless of the causes right now opposition to the changes caused by these protests such as defunding or abolishing the police, the rewriting of American history(America did not start in 1776 as a cry for freedom but in 1619 when the first slaves were brought here), widespread mainstream acceptance that America is systematically racist, if you say “All lives matter” you are a racist seem about as effective as ants trying to stop a train. The long term? We shall see.

The George Floyd riots have been more widespread and comprehensive but maybe not as intensely focused on one area as previous riots, where more destruction was done to one city.
There is a profound spirit of anarchy also that previous riots never had.
The Floyd riots have had more violence and destruction that anarchist sympathetic leftists want to admitt.By saying the Floyd riots are actually peaceful protest, which is hogwash, the Floyd riots have been vicious and violent and a greater anarchist spirit than other riots in history.Even if less people may have died, more people will die long term from the philosophical changes brought about.
Defunding the police will hurt inner city black people more than anyone else, suburban whites can afford expensive alarm systems and private security. In rural America everyone is armed, who is going to be most vulnerable to criminals if the teeth is taken out of modern policing.Inner city blacks will be the most hurt.
This modern generation is very intelligent and very educated but lacks experience and they have very smart solutions to problems of the times. But time will show that when it comes the modern generations solutions is that the antidote is worse than the poison.

Perfect. Engage the David Attenborough voice.
"Here we see the ferocious redskin spud. Armed and painted in the proper colours, this fellow is clearly on the warpath. Much like the native americans he in no way resembles. Remarkable, isn't it?"

It's hilarious watching ppl act like these demands are new and not the kind of thing native (real) Americans have been denouncing for decades. They're just getting more headway now bc more white ppl have decided they care.
Why don't we rename them the Orangeskins after a certain current DC resident?

They could choose (with permission) to honour a specific indigenous person or group of people, and even use their platform of influence and some of their profits to help indigenous people.
It might not be considered so offensive if they kept the name "redskins", but used their franchise to fund and promote education, sports, healthcare, etc. for people living on reservations. I have to think that there are some "red" people out there who would probably be fiercely loyal to them if they did so, and are probably opposed to and offended by the name at least partly because they don't (to my knowledge) do anything like that.

I seem to recall actual Natives being pretty "meh" about it, so I don't think this is so much an actual issue of Natives being offended so much as the Washington Redskins pre-empting people being offended on behalf of Natives.

There must be lots of caucasians here. If that was the logo of a sports team in a nation where caucasians were a minority, and it had a similar origin story to the Redskins, would you be at all offended? I wouldn't. If anything, it seems like a good thing. They could have picked anything, but they picked that, and it's depicted in a respectful way.

Terry Francona Says Indians Should Change Nickname: 'It's Time to Move Forward'
Addressing reporters during summer camp on Sunday, Francona said "it's time to move forward" with a new name.
Francona's comments come after the team announced on Friday it was looking at options with its nickname:
"We have had ongoing discussions organizationally on these issues. The recent social unrest in our community and our country has only underscored the need for us to keep improving as an organization on issues of social justice.
"With that in mind, we are committed to engaging our community and appropriate stakeholders to determine the best path forward with regard to our team name.
While the focus of the baseball world shifts to the excitement of an unprecedented 2020 season, we recognize our unique place in the community and are committed to listening, learning and acting in the manner that can best unite and inspire our city and all those who support our team."
Francona explained that he used to say the franchise was "never trying to be disrespectful" when asked about the nickname in the past, but "I don't think that's a good enough answer today."
Cleveland previously eliminated the Chief Wahoo logo from its jerseys and hats starting with the 2019 season. The logo, which had been used in various iterations by the franchise since 1947, was replaced by a block C logo.
The nickname has been used since 1915 after the franchise went through a series of monikers from 1900 to '14, including the Lake Shores, Bluebirds, Broncos and Naps.
Proposals
Washington Deep States
Cleveland mistakes by the lake
Since the country is going SJW
Nazi Capital Privileged
Cleveland Racists
