I don't think Miss Gu is that deep a thinker. She knows about China from the news but clearly $$ means she didn't care. At the end of the day she's a sportsperson so I don't take her comments that seriously anyway. However, she and daddy are helping to bolster the image of the CCP in the global eye so she's unwittingly helping the propaganda war for the CCP.


That seems reasonably likely to be true.

China also uses athletics like most dictatorships have.

aside from the special olympics, the regular olympics stink to heaven and i haven't watched them in 5 decades.

I only watch the athletics.The rest is the country with the most $$ wins

I'm not sure why one would assume that's something she would desire. She hasn't positioned herself to be a political activist, she's just an athlete and the whole controversy stems from her switching from a nation we're used to being coded as 'the good guys' to one we're used to be coded as 'the bad guys'.

She switched from representing one set of bad guys playing a game to representing some other bad guys. I don't care what evil empire she's representing.

Wait, is it now a problem that she's said something about violence against Asian Americans motivated by racist sentiments and the pandemic? She's entitled to call that out even if you don't approve of her representing the PRC.

If that's your example of her being overly involved in political views you don't have a valid example because speaking out against racism shouldn't be deemed political in the first place. Beating up people who look like me won't halt the pandemic isn't a political statement.

No the link alludes to something that's published elsewhere that she's active on social media promoting social justice causes and human rights. That includes her posting support for BLM,

She may be too young to realise (but I doubt it) that the CCP is actually practicing "Asian hate" against Tibetans, Indians, Bhutanese, tribal peoples in southern China, Uighers and other Asian minority groups, The CCP practice Han supremacy, Everyone in Asia knows this.

The more I read, the more appropriate I find the thread headline, "The Mystery of Eileen Gu." I don't get her choice, and I worry about all the potential ramifications she must not have thought through.

The mystery for me is how she got away with it.
