At this point, in the "Propaganda Games," it would be in the US's "best interest" if negligence was found within the Wuhan Institute of Virology (i.e., a viral leak resulted from that negligence), or even that China deliberately developed the COVID virus.

By now, it does not seem to matter exactly where the virus originated or even who is responsible, although one may derive some sense of schadenfreude from this bit of news . . .

China reported 5,370 new covid-19 cases on Tuesday, according to the country's National Health Commission, the biggest one-day increase of the entire pandemic.  The high case count comes as the province of Jilin and its 24 million people were placed into lockdown on Monday, with millions more in China under harsh restrictions.

The Chinese cities of Shenzhen (17.5 million), Langfang (5 million), and Dongguan (65 million) are currently in lockdown with strict rules about leaving only leaving your home for essential reasons.  Shanghai (26 million) and Xian (13 million) also have some version of covid restrictions in place, meaning that many restaurants and theaters are closed.

Shenzhen, known as China's Silicon Valley and home to major tech operations like Foxconn, is scheduled to be in lockdown until at least March 20, and it is not clear how long Beijing will pursue a "covid zero" strategy of completely eliminating the virus.  China's draconian lockdowns and mass testing were able to largely eliminate the coronavirus over the past two years, but the more-transmissible omicron variant is proving much harder to crush.

It would have to be negligence.
Why would the Chinese let it loose on their own people?

These sorts of things aren't that unusual.

If I can understand this sentence literally. I saw some interesting points about this in a Chinese political debate forum.

One of the factions declared:
A. There are indeed Ukrainian labs injected with U.S. money. At the same time, China has also injected funds into these laboratories.
B. The infusion of U.S. funds into biological laboratories spreads all over the world. This includes the most famous one in China. (If I don't understand wrong, this should refer to Wuhan Institute of Virology)
No references are given for the relevant discussions.

If the above statement is true. This may indicate that the propaganda is actually using facts, but is misleading.

I am trying to search for evidence about B. The official website of the Wuhan Institute of Virology and its introduction on Baidu Encyclopedia do not mention the source of funding.
In a Chinese article talking about this information, the close ties between the USAID-funded Ecological Health Alliance and Shi Zhengli's team at the Wuhan Virology Laboratory are mentioned.
I put relevant keywords into a Google search. The result was messy and beyond my ability to interpret. I'm not sure which source of information is authoritative.

This might serve as an entry point.

Yes I think there were two parties at fault. The money that paid for the institute came from the US. But the incompetence that led to the escape of the virus came from the faulty local systems in place,

All roads lead back to Rome (so to speak). The question remains. What was the purpose of manufacturing the virus in the first place?

^^being that it was being kept on the down-low, one can only guess that the reasons were all bad, whatever they were.

Originally I considered it was a method of culling older people out of the stressed system we live in.
While I am not convinced, it is still on my radar. 8)

Interesting idea. Reduce the cost burden on the health system by culling the most vulnerable.

I don't know how the US feels about this.

For China, the likelihood of such a motive is very low.
A. I am currently in contact with the Chinese civil service system. Respecting the elderly and protecting their safety is given a very high priority. (An example: The establishment of a canteen for the elderly living alone has a high priority in the space allocation of the community center)
B. According to health care providers from many different sources, treating hopeless diseases (mostly from the elderly) at exorbitant prices is one of the most important sources of income for the health care system today. There is a lot of evidence that there is currently a funding crisis in China's healthcare system.
C.Considering China's current policy on the epidemic. The pandemic has taken a huge toll on the entire economy.

This is not in line with Chinese culture and interests.

And, if, this Earth is dangerously overpopulated why not begin a process of population reduction by starting with what might be termed 'the low-hanging fruit'.

(Also, Government: "Keeping all those old and disabled people alive uses up a whole bunch of money we could more productively be putting toward fighting climate change, and they don't produce enough income tax revenue anyway.")

A few references to the overpopulation topic, about which there is much talk which goes several different directions:

Well, think about how the coronavirus had virtually no effect on children and targetted old people and those who had serious comorbidities.

Do I believe inhumanity is capable of such a thing?
What do *you* think? 8O

As I said, it is a serious consideration but inconclusive. 8)

Yes I agree, it would be counter to Confucian values of respecting the elderly.

I think there is a ticking time bomb related to whether we can sustainably maintain the current unfettered population growth. In the 1980s it was hoped space research would solve the problem by creating space colonies. But this has become so delayed to the point that it will be a century before any meaningful colonies begin to be set up (I don't think Elon Musk's current venture will be able to sustain more than a handful of settlers on Mars and probably won't happen for another 20-30 years).

Whether viruses are man-made or appear naturally is irrelevant. overpopulation is inevitable.

Worth saying - the "lab leak" theory is, scientifically speaking, very much an outsider compared to accidental transfer from animals. I've been following this mainly via "New Scientist" magazine. Turns out there are many, many diseases out there in the natural world that have the potential to infect humans- it's just that we don't normally encounter them. AIDs is descended from a chimpanzee disease. Bats in particular have a very high disease burden because of their crowded colonies, and bat diseases can often infect primates. Case in point: ebola. And one of the many dubious "treatments" in Chinese traditional medicine is to rub powdered bat dung in your eyes as a cure for blindness.

The initial outbreak was HEAVILY linked to the live animal section of the seafood market in Wuhan. Most of the early cases were people who worked or shopped there. Lots of wild and tame animals of many species, crammed together in unsanitary conditions - perfect chance for a disease to cross over multiple times. Recent studies suggest that it may have started with a cage full of wild raccoon-dogs, which were present at the market and are now known to catch the disease. The SARS outbreak 20 years ago is now known to have come from palm civets sold in Chinese markets, and the civets probably caught it from horseshoe bats. So there's precedent.

The seafood market link has been known about since February 2020. This has not changed, no matter what clickbait garbage certain sections of the press and social media have been peddling in the meantime. The evidence has only grown stronger.
