We are currently having war crimes trials in Australia where recipients of medals of valor are being tried for murdering civilians. The same happened after Iraq. You might think the local population hate extemists and love the Americans but the reality is the locals aren't living under a rock. They know US troops kill civilians. At the end of the day the western troops are seen as an occupationary force and the US supported governments were seen as puppets (ironically no different to pro-Russian leaders in Belarus or the Ukraine).

I'm torn about Ben Roberts-Smith. Being on the frontline he was a war hero and very very few men could accomplish what he did under enemy fire.

The allegation against him about his role in throwing an Afgan teenager of a cliff is pretty damning. he also seems to be intimidating witnesses.

This happened after the Vietnam war as well where the army closed ranks on not disclosing responsibility on My Lai massacre of civilians.
