Woman pretends to be highschool student due to loneliness
Morally I dunno. You might argue that it wouldnt be as morally bad as if she a man of 29.
She looks incredibly young for her age. Male actors who pulled of playing highschool students when 29 include Johnny Depp and more recently Darren Barnett who is a 29 year old actor who does pull off a high school jock in the Netflix series "Never have I Ever"
And yes, straight to jail for a 29 year old man
But they still look like adults. Films will use 20 something year old adults to play underage teens due to the content of the film and because they can work longer hours. This has skewed peoples perspective on ages like they will even use 40 year olds to play 25 year olds and use 30 year olds to play young college students.
No way did Johnny Depp look like a teenager in the early 90s when he was in his late twenties and early thirties. I will agree he still looked like one in 1987 but late teens and young adults look the same to me which is why it's hard to tell if someone is underage or barely legal age. You don't start looking like an adult till around age 25 because that is when age begins to show like loss of baby fat in face, loss of volume which gives us that mature look.

A more recent follow-up (2023-05-15):
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The 29-year-old woman who was charged with trying to use a fake birth certificate to enroll at New Brunswick High School will be subject to a mental health evaluation as part of a pretrial intervention program.
Hyejeong Shin, as well as having to pay mandatory fees and fines, will be subject to any additional conditions once an intake evaluation is conducted as she enters the 36-month program...
... she tried to enroll in the school because she was longing for the sort of friendships she enjoyed when she attended a boarding school soon after coming to the United States alone at 16, according to a published report by abc7ny.com.
At no time was anyone or any student in danger and this entire case is more about my client wanting to return to a place of safety and welcoming and an environment that she looks back on fondly and nothing more.

Imagine getting away with this and graduating with better marks the second time around. ![]()

Just a reminder: under international law, an occupying power has no right of self-defense, and those who are occupied have the right and duty to liberate themselves by any means possible.
I sympathize with her -- not for what she did, but for the motivations behind it. Everyone (imho) wants to be in a safe place with lots of friends, especially (1) after a divorce, and (2) turning 30.
Again, I do hope she gets the help / support / treatment she needs instead of jail.

An even MORE recent (2023-05-16) update:
NEW BRUNSWICK -- The woman who successfully passed herself off as a high school student for almost a week will not serve any time in jail.
Hyejeong Shin, 29, attended classes at New Brunswick High School in January and interacted with other students. Her days as a pretend student came to an end when she could not provide proper documentation. At a court hearing in March her attorney, Darren Gelber, argued that she was not a danger to other students at the school.
A Superior Court judge ruled Monday that Shin can enroll in a pre-trial program for three years, according to NJ.com and TAP into New Brunswick. She must also take a mental health test and was ordered to pay fines.
Pre-trial intervention allows first-time, non-violent offenders to avoid getting a conviction record if they remain out of trouble for a certain period of time. It usually requires that the defendant plead guilty to an offense.

Sigmund Freud would say she has unfinished business from her highschool days. I am sure there are others.
More likely the popularity of highschool dramas glamorise highschool and people perhaps year for time when they think they had it better
The sad thing is, I hated school and wouldn't want to go back there.
But looking back now, I had my best friends ever when I was 16- 18 and my early 20s. I've never had good friends like that since. So I kind of wish I could go back to that situation, but life has moved on.

Same! I had closer relations with kids my age compared to now. I can understand, all the drama and wonderment. shared experiences over small things. It was fun (and this is coming from somebody who was bullied in school).
I often project my adult brain in my 16 year old body. The things I could have done

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

There are GED programs at most community colleges for adults that didn't graduate. There's a lot of issues that come from having people with different maturity and different legal rights. Schools are generally legally responsible for teaching students how to be adults, which involves limiting some rights that wouldn't be appropriate for adults.
Even for students with documented disability, there is a time limit for enrolling and attending.
