Song for a Winter's Night

https://youtu.be/JRIlTvYp0ok

The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top
The snow is softly falling
The air is still in the silence of my room
I hear your voice softly calling
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead
My glass is almost empty
I read again between the lines upon each page
The words of love you sent me
If I could know within my heart
That you were lonely too
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
The fire is dying
Now my lamp is growing dim
The shades of night are lifting
The morning light steals across my window pane
Where webs of snow are drifting
If I could only have you near
To breathe a sigh or two
I would be happy just to hold the hands I love
On this winter night with you
And to be once again with you

* I met him in 1988, not 1980.
That was a late-night, teary typo.

I certainly know who he was. Constant radio presence stateside during the ‘70s and on oldies stations today.

He got his start writing for country artists in the early 60s before performing his own stuff. And countless other artists from folk, pop, and country, continued to cover his work after he got famous. But you might not think a song of his would work as electronic dance music. Think again. Great cut from the soundtrack of the forgotten 90s movie "Studio 54".

Peter, Paul, and Mary did my fav version of this song...which marked the exact moment an era ended and the "Jet Age" began in folk music because it has the line "you cant hop a jet plane like you can a frieght train...".

I remember him in the movie Western, Harry Tracy, in which he had also provided music.

There's a love I hold dear
And it shines through each year
And it makes things seem different somehow
It's for better or worse
It's for people who thirst
For a love that burns brighter right now
And it shines on and on 'til all sadness is gone
And if children had wings I would sing them this song
With a smile on my face and a tear in my eye
Everything will be fine by and by
There were things that were said
There were things that were done
And a wife cannot stand too much pain
And what I thought was best
Couldn't please her much less
But my love still goes on, that don't change
And it shines on and on 'til all sadness is gone
And if children had wings I would sing them this song
With a smile on my lips and a tear in my eye
Everything will be fine by and by
And it shines on and on 'til all sadness is gone
And if children had wings I would sing them this song
With a smile on my face and a tear in my eye
Everything will be fine by and by
And it shines on and on 'til all sadness is gone
And if children had wings I would sing them this song
With a smile on my face and a tear in my eye
Everything will be fine by and by

This is one of my favorites, one you don't usually hear on the radio often:

That's very sad news. I'm a huge fan of Gordon Lightfoot and his music. He's gone up to the big rock band in the sky.

Yes, I grew up listening to him. If You Could Read My Mind was my favorite, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald a close second. Legend! RIP

Yes, have listened to him most of my life.

He was also a canoeist, traveling in the great northern woods of Canada. That’s how he got such great imagery of Canada’s wilderness into some of his songs.
