The "Cool" kids in my School used to shoplift candy from the nearby convenience stores and sell it in the playground during recess. Or you could get home-made cookies and/or Lollipops from cheerleaders. Occasionally, you could get Cinnamon Toothpicks (they were mostly popular because the teachers hated them in class, but they weren't against school rules.)

Backpacks have been banned in the school district I attended since 1992.

And this was before the era of mass shootings.

That's crazy, how did you carry all your things?

I carried nearly all my books with me.

My High School tried to do a lot to reduce the chances of any sort of violence (building locked during school hours, classroom doors locked during classes, metal detectors etc.) but it was the people (students and staff) that were always propping doors and windows open, not following procedures, that made everyone less than secure. we had homeless people wandering in off the street to use the restrooms, steal food from the cafeteria, etc. Anyone could just walk-in. We even had our school safety officers leave loaded weapons in student restrooms. Its the people, not the systems that are the weakest links.

Sounds like there is something missing from this story... perhaps the why as to windows and doors were propped open...? Could it be heat related, and wanting to reduce global warming and expenses by having no AC in the building?

The usual reason for a side door to be propped open was a teacher wanting to slip out for a quick smoke break or to get something from their cars. The trouble was you couldn't get back IN to the building without going around to the main entrance even with a key. Not for anything like combating global warming :D I can't imagine any of the older teachers caring that much about something they weren't going to live long enough to see.
