Well, at least it will tackle a problem that is virtually non-existent in the UK - personation

Tories know the real threat - potential left-leaning voters.

Yes exactly. I will be going to vote Labour on thursday with just my expired, revoked for health reasons photo driving licence with my old address on it.

Will be interested to see if they accept it.

You have hit the nail right on the head there, friend.

That is EXACTLY what they are hoping for.

Please let us know what happens, Rossall? I'm interested to see how strict they are going to be. I suspect it depends what area you live in...

Keir Starmer's fury over ID blunder that could leave 2million Brits unable to vote

It comes as the Daily Mirror launched its Get ID, Get a Vote campaign to raise awareness that the rules have changed. Up to 2.1 million are at risk of being turned away at polling stations as they don’t have photo ID

Campaigners have accused the Tories of deterring young voters who are more likely to back Labour.

Mr Starmer said in in the meantime signing up for postal votes was “the surest way to ensure the voice of as many people as possible is heard”.

Yep. Exactly.

If the government wants fair voting at elections, they need to do a big campaign about getting photo ID. Most people I know don't realise the rules have changed. So this suggests they DON'T want fair voting.

They also need to provide free photo ID to all who need it. We went through such a palaver getting photo ID for our daughter. It would put many people off at the first hurdle.

They do, it's called Voter Authority Certificate, although you can no longer apply for a Voter Authority Certificate to vote in the elections in England on 4 May 2023. You can still apply for a Voter Authority Certificate to use in future elections and referendums. Voter Authority Certificate

Shouldn't be an issue , The electoral commission websites states

Out of date photo ID

You can still use your photo ID if it's out of date, as long as it looks like you.

The name on your ID should be the same name you used to register to vote.

I found the information here

https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/ ... s-document

Maybe have it on your phone just in case you have an officious jobsworthy helper at the voting booth.

So how many people know about this? I didn't, and I'm quite politically aware. Was there a large campaign publicising this so that everyone knew well in advance and could apply easily?

I suppose we'll see after the elections this Thursday...

This is the concern isn't it. Will everyone at polling stations be properly trained in assessing photo IDs? Will it depend on which one you go to and what type of helpers are there? It's all pretty vague.

And is that the electoral commission the government is now in control of? https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/poli ... -democracy

Labour have screwed up on this in my opinion. I'm on the Labour email list and have not had a single email about the need for photo ID.

They need to get their act together before the general election.

Well said. They could have scored big time with this situation- helping people vote in elections...

That's the one

On 5 June 2015, Lord Nigel Vinson criticized the Electoral Commission for its failure to remain politically non-partisan and called for it to be reformed.

On 14 September 2018, whilst the British High Court of Justice agreed that the Vote Leave campaign during the EU referendum had broken the law on spending limits, it also ruled that the Electoral Commission had misinterpreted the rules prior to the referendum taking place in advice it gave to the Vote Leave campaign, allowing them to break the law without even being aware. Anti-Brexit campaigner Lord Adonis criticized the commission's incompetence, and said that "a rather more fit and proper body" should be in charge of any future referendums that might take place.

On 13 May 2020, during Prime Minister's Questions, Conservative MP Peter Bone attacked the Electoral Commission for its investigations into four separate members of pro-Leave campaigns, who were all found innocent of any wrongdoing. He called the commission "politically corrupt, totally biased and morally bankrupt". Prime Minister Boris Johnson responded by saying that he had hoped "all those who spent so much time and energy drawing attention to their supposed guilt would spend just as long drawing attention to their genuine innocence".

On 29 August 2020, Co-Chairman of the Conservative Party Amanda Milling called for major reform of the Commission in a piece in The Telegraph, accusing the organisation of a "lack of accountability" and of operating by an "unclear rulebook".
