The more stories like this I read, the less I think Elon Musk is crazy for warning us about the dangers of AI.

I'm not so sure on this. The AI in I, Robot had the three laws built in. When it noticed we were harming ourselves it concluded the First Law obligated it to intervene.

I think that was an AI, just not as advanced as the one in Colossus: The Forbin Project...which, even though it did not have the three laws built in, made the same decision as the AI in I, Robot: rule us. Colossus, however, did have the nuclear weapons...it found them useful in persuading us to "behave".

I doubt very much that AI will ever become self-aware any time soon. I think it might have just been pure fluke this happened.

I think that humans are still the most dangerous creatures, but it would only take some nutty scientist somewhere to suddenly stumble on a way to make AI sentient and spread it all over the internet.

Or maybe I read too much sci fi, I hope so!

The processing power of a typical 2005 Vs 2015 computer is impressive while 2015 to 2025 will be nowhere near as big of a leap.

I just don't see AI becoming a threat in general for at least 150 years and serious AI which rivals that of a human won't be possible with anything transistor based as much as people say otherwise. A completely new type of computer is needed.

That's what bothers me- the new type of computer. Humans seem to develop in leaps and bounds. Eureka moments. Remember the microchip and how that changed everything? It could be something like that.

The power of an individual computer might not be the key factor...they are networked, after all. Plus quantum computing is on the edge of becoming a real factor in computers.

The intelligence of software, however, is hazier. But, software wouldn't need to be too bright if it had control of the correct peripherals. (Think nuclear missiles, robots, 3-D printers, etc.)
