A "shank" is the longest part of a metal tool. So it got turned into a verb in American prison slang. To shank someone. Ie to stab them with some "improvised" weapon made within the prison.

Makes sense, like in a abattoir.

King Edward I of England, in the late 1200s, was called "Edward Longshanks" because he was a tall dude of 6-2 with long legs.

I somehow doubt this is the last time he'll be on the receiving end of prison violence.

No matter their crime and how vile they are, I don’t like the idea of nasty things happening to people in prison.

From the OP:

Quote:
An ongoing AP investigation has uncovered deep, previously unreported flaws within the Bureau of Prisons, the Justice Department’s largest law enforcement agency with more than 30,000 employees, 158,000 inmates and an annual budget of about $8 billion.

AP reporting has revealed rampant sexual abuse and other criminal conduct by staff, dozens of escapes, chronic violence, deaths and severe staffing shortages that have hampered responses to emergencies, including inmate assaults and suicides.
Disturbing stuff.

So, Chauvin was not in the general population in a maximum security facility, and then he was transferred to the general population in a low-security facility noted for having violent incidents, close to the time he had an appeal denied, am I reading that right? I don't think this is a coincidence if I am. It smells like someone in the prison system wanted him dead.

Regardless if Chauvin is transferred to another prison or not, the remainder of his days
IMO will be a nightmare because everybody knows who he is.

That's only on Television - unless they request solitary confinement or become violent offenders themselves.

https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/derek-chauvin-was-stabbed-22-times-in-federal-prison-attack-charges-say/

Like so many people, I don't feel sorry for Chauvin at all.

That angle should be investigated, for sure.

Disturbing stuff.

Bad stuff happens in both jails and in prisons. It is a problem.

Sometimes to the near innocent.

Other times to individuals...its hard to feel sorry for (but it doesnt make it right)like when Geoffry Daumier got ambushed in the prison laundry room and got stabbed to death.
