Kate, the Princess of Wales, announced Monday that she has completed her chemotherapy treatment and will undertake a light schedule of engagements until the end of the year.
“Doing what I can to stay cancer-free is now my focus,” she said in a video message, some six months after revealing she had an unspecified form of cancer following intense public speculation about her health.
“The last nine months have been incredibly tough for us as a family,” Kate said, adding that the “cancer journey is complex, scary and unpredictable for everyone, especially those closest to you.”
“With humility, it also brings you face to face with your own vulnerabilities in a way you have never considered before, and with that, a new perspective on everything,” Kate said.
Slow music plays as she delivers her message via a voiceover on the video, which was filmed in several locations including a forest, a beach and a field in Norfolk, a county in the east of England. She wears a long white summer dress with patterns throughout.
At times she is featured alone and at other times she is joined by her husband and heir to the British throne, Prince William, and their three children — George, 11; Charlotte, 9; and Louis, 6.
Thanking people for the support she and her family received, she said that “although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”
“I am however looking forward to being back at work and undertaking a few more public engagements in the coming months when I can,” she added.
Calling the video “astonishing,” NBC News royal commentator Daisy McAndrew said it would “come as a huge relief to many royal fans and people who wish Katherine well throughout the world.”
“It’s incredibly intimate. We really haven’t seen something like this of the family all playing games, holding hands,” she added. “The intimacy between Kate and William is something that we haven’t seen something like this before, real public displays of affection, lots of hand-holding, lots of kissing.”
Kate has made several public appearances since she revealed she had cancer in a video in March where she said she was undergoing “a course of preventative chemotherapy” on the advice of her medical team.
Both Charles and Kate have declined to specify either what type of cancer they have or details about their prognosis.
With fewer working royals available to carry out the ribbon cuttings, state events and awards ceremonies that make up the life of a modern royal, the remaining family members have been forced to take on more events.
So Camilla; Princess Anne, the king’s sister; and his youngest brother, Prince Edward, have had to shoulder the load.

Princess Kate has made her first public appearance since announcing that she had completed chemotherapy and would be returning to some public duties.
Joined by her husband, Prince William, she was seen attending a Sunday service at Crathie Kirk, a church near the family's royal Balmoral estate in Scotland.
In new photos, the Princess of Wales, 42, was captured smiling in the passenger seat of a car driven by William and accompanied by a convoy carrying other members of the royal family, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
NBC News royal contributor Katie Nicholl said Kate was beginning to look "very much like her old self," but warned that her attendance at the church service did not mean the public would be seeing much more of the princess.
"I think when it comes to important things, she will be there," said Nicholl. "But her priority, as she has said, is her health, is staying cancer free and not carrying out a packed schedule of events."
Last week, Kate held her first official engagement since completing treatment, according to the Royal Circular, a daily briefing of royal activities published in the Times of London newspaper.

Yin Zhang et al. suggested unrestrained eating behavior was independently associated with increased risk of gastrointestinal tract cancers (Brewster et al., 2015), and David H. Brewster et al. thinks patients with eating disorders are at increased risk of developing cancer.

AFAIK all we have been revealed is that the Princess of Wales has "abdominal" cancer. That term includes more types of cancer (eg ovarian cancer) than only those in the gastro-abdominal tract. Genes inherited and "spontaneous" genetic changes during life play a large role in many forms of cancer. While choice of food and diet may have some impact on the health of all of us, the study didn't seem to me to have any particular relevance to Kate. It seems very unlikely to me that she has esophageal cancer or an eating disorder..
She has lost weight, as many people do during cancer treatment because of the side effects of the treatment itself.
I see her as the jewel in the current royal family and hope for her complete recovery before year's end. We will probably never be told what her actual diagnosis was.

She was suspected of having an eating disorder well before having children and was hospitalised before. I don't want to subscribe to theories and it's ultimately nobodies business and wish her the best in her recovery.
I'm sorry but comparing her to a "jewel" is a bit much. there is a term for one who digs for jewels but you substitute gold for jewel.

It's also widely known that Catherine suffered from Hyperemesis Gravidarum in all her pregnancies. If she does/did have an eating disorder it would further irritate her GI tract.
My first thought was ovarian or uterine, since she could have gone for cysts or endo and later received malignant biopsy results.
That being said, we have no idea what her cancer is and we'll likely never know.
It's best to respect her privacy and I wish her well.

I suspected long back she did have an eating disorder, but there's a few reasons why I think its been downplayed. Apart from privacy issues (which are obvious) she's also a role model for many young girls. Kate is really similar in appearance to a well known football WAG in Australia named Rebecca Judd. She's a celebrity here the same way Victoria Beckham is in the UK. Celebrity means downplaying how they keep themselves so thin. Coincidentally Victoria Beckham did also have a well publicised battle with anorexia.
Both Judd and Kate have exactly the same physical proportions (unusually thin) and height. Rebecca Judd was also accused of having an eating disorder but she flatly denied it.

I think MaxE is saying the prognosis is really bad for stomach cancer (the stats are from here Stomach cancer can be fatal if it is not found early. If found early, stomach cancer can be curable. However, stomach cancer is often not diagnosed until it has spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. In its advanced stages, only 1 in 5 people will survive for 5 years.
