The vast majority of Facebook posts don't go viral and are not seen by very many people. And her original post simply mentioned, without necessarily endorsing, her neighbor's belief about a missing cat.

So I see no a priori reason to dismiss the sincerity of her regret. I think it's good that she is now speaking up against the rumor.

Of course this is a cautionary tale for the rest of us: DON'T REPEAT UNFOUNDED RUMORS ONLINE!

I think you're defining 'regular normal people' much more narrowly than can realistically be done.
