I’m certainly not condoning what happened; I agree with the punishment that was doled out, but BYU actively promotes the bigotry of the church and has a long history of doing so.

While both homosexuals and heterosexuals must abide by the church's law of chastity (i.e. no sexual relations outside of marriage, no crude language, and no pornography), the Honor Code [at BYU] additionally prohibits all forms of physical intimacy that give expression to homosexual feelings (e.g. dating, hugging, hand holding, or kissing) as of 2022 [and currently]. There is no similar restriction against expressing heterosexual feelings.

Maybe the university shouldn’t be allowed to compete in sports if they are going to discriminate against LGBTQ students, not that I know anything about how college sports work. I think it could put pressure on the university to change its sh***y policies, though, which would be a very good thing.

I agree with what you say about WNBA. I don't know much about their fan culture except that its makeup is probably different from NBA and if I were to say anything more I'd get into trouble. I suspect anyone acting that way at a WNBA game is not part of their mainstream fan base but rather a troublemaker who went to the game in order to act out. Nothing to do with racism, but there have also been incidents of people throwing dildos onto the court (I won't call them "fans" because again I don't think they are real WNBA fans). Come to think of it, even some of what appears to be race-based harassment is probably more inspired by attitudes about gender rather than race.

I still maintain that none of the sort of racist behavior you described at AFL and rugby matches occurs at NFL games.

There has been some racist behavior at baseball games, but mostly in Boston. At many other ballparks, that would earn you considerable opprobrium from other fans and you might be ejected or even taken into custody by police. Baseball games are heavily policed and hooliganism isn't tolerated, at least not in the major leagues.

EDIT my NFL experience is limited to attending Ravens home games. What I say is based on what I've experienced there. Maybe stuff happens at other venues that I haven't been exposed to.

^^^ Fair enough

Reading the article it seems several campuses have a history of racist chanting in college sports (not just Brigham Young in Utah), University of Colorado, Oregon and Arizona. Check out the demographics of those states and it's not hard to see why its difficult to stamp out this form of behavior.

^^^ I understand it's religious chanting in this instance but the intention is the same and all the campuses have a history (usual suspects) for throwing slurs at sports events in the past including BYU themselves (that was.my only point).

Please don't invent inferences and side issues which have nothing to do with what's been posted and nothing to do with the topic itself.

Side issues like this: "but the intention is the same" - this is your invention and an off topic misreading of the thread as being about racist chanting.
The intention is not the same because the chanting wasn't about race, no matter how much you try to present it as such.

Please post on topic or don't post at all.
