His family has now said he was very ill with pneumonia and hadn't been sleeping because of his work on a new movie (is this Batman?).

If he was taking sleeping pills and had pneumonia, his respiratory system could have been dampened enough that he either stopped breathing or his heart was set into arrhythmia.

Too sad.

He also struck me as having 'Aspie' traits, such as an inability to maintain eye contact with interviewers, etc.

He was starring as the Joker in the new Batman movie that just got done filming in Chicago a month or two ago. Sounded like a GOOD performance of a really evil, sinister Joker was in the offing, too, and I was very much looking forward to seeing it.

I also recently saw some its trailers on YouTube and posters on a Chicago forvm that I follow.

Just heard the word this morning.

Leaving aside reports that it is a drug overdose (I want to wait on the police and the coroner before that), it could also have been suicide or an aneurysm.

It seems to have been a suicide by OD of painkillers

Its always the people you don't expect. So many people survive from massive overdoses and he was a big strapping over 6 foot lad so it must have been a fair old number of pills. I don't think he would commited suicide having a young daughter so I'm plumping for either a pre-existing condition or a heart defect that has contributed to his untimely death. Gilliam must be devastated, he has some bad luck during the production of films like Lost In La Mancha was jinxed. Anyway thats just a footnote, poor guy, he was mesmerising in Brokeback Mountain.

Thanks Beau99. Hmm maybe there will be no answer, just that sudden death syndrome. A couple of people are quoted as saying he burned the candle "both ends".

Yeah. And although I won't rule out polypharmacology with illegal drugs and the sleeping pills mixed up, I'm not convinced about this supposed "$20 bill nosestraw".
