The legal age should not be lowered it should be raised to 25. The brain does not stop growing until around the age of 24-25 that is why many people calm down after they exit their early 20s. I say let the brain develop so they can make the best possible decisions about drinking and driving.

Two of the schools mentioned in the article were Dartmouth and Ohio State. I personally know students from both universities, and those are EXTREMELY heavy-drinking schools. Hell, Dartmouth's mascot is a freakin' keg. Yes, that's right, a keg as a mascot. But there is good reason why people shouldn't be drinking at a young age- it interferes with brain development, which isn't fully complete until the mid-twenties.

And for everyone's entertainment, here is what Dartmouth students do as a prank to visiting high school kids.

We already have the highest drinking age in the world, so raising it even higher would be insane. It is not fair for an american to wait another three years to drink compared to aussies and brits.

It might not be fair but you must remember we have on of the highest DWI records in the world. Also drinking messes with the ability of the Prefrontal cortex to grow and mature properly, unlike the rest of the body the Prefrontal cortex does not stop growing until the age of 25.

agreed. I think 21 is the max, anything higher, and there'd just be a revolt. Once your 21 you are an adult, fully grown! so anything above that would be stupid.

there should be signs put out to say that drinking messes with your mind if you are under 25, but you should still be able to purchase some beers at 18, because in all the states the age to buy tobacco is 18, which is way worse than alcohol

Your not fully grown till your 25 as I have said before the Prefrontal cortex the decision making part of your brain does not finish grown and maturing until your around 25.

Thanks Orwell ^_^ I like yours too ^_^.

25, maybe in America. :P well here the limit is 18, and our country is full of binge drinking alcoholics, so 21 is a good age I think. People find other stuff do, when they need it most around the age of 16-20 in America. But here, people are drinking and doing hard drugs by the age of 16 usually.

You cant even set foot in a bar if your under 21. Well at least thats the rules in seattle, it might be different in other areas. 18 is the right age because that is when people are judged mature enough to make decisions for themselves, although it is 21 to make decisions for others. If other countries manage with ages ranging from 15 to 18, we could easily.

To many, there is more fun in doing something that you are not allowed to do as opposed to doing something you are. So, yeah, if you drink and drive above 21, the chances are that you are going to do it under 21. CAPEESH?

So yeah, I'll have the guts shot out of me in Iraq, but I'm too irresponsible to have a cold one? F/// NO.

Drinking is a right! Anyone who can walk or talk should be allowed to drink! Roll back the age to 1!

And yet, you wouldn't get far if you went to court and argued that you should be able to get out of a contract because after all, "at the time I signed that, I was only 24 and my prefontal cortex was still undeveloped." Either 18 year olds are grown-ups or they aren't - it's not right to assign all of the responsibilities of adulthood to an 18 year old, while withholding some of the privileges.

your joking? :?

Too be honest, I think 16 works pretty well. Like in Italy its 16, and the people there don't binged drink, they'll drink for pleasure, and not get paraletic. But once the age limit has been set for a while, I don't think changing it is a good idea.
