It never did me any harm.

But it did, because it was hurting you. Inflicting pain on a child is evil.

Lomg term psychological harm, not short term physical harm, methinks.

Unprovoked spanking is abuse. No question about that.

However, if you need to teach something that involves consequences that may be direr than a spanking, then spanking may be in order.

The occasional swat on the butt might not do any harm, but often spanking involves pulling out a belt or a switch (long, thin, flexible tree branch) and striking the child repeatedly with a great deal of force. Some adults also take out their frustrations on the child's behind.

Any form of corporal punishment is abusive, and often ineffective. There are more humane and effective ways to punish a child.

I've got mixed feelings about corporal punishment. My parents never spanked me but the head teacher at my school beat me with a cane on several occasions for various bad behaviour, usually fighting.

I did take real exception to being beaten with a cane in my first week at that school (aged 11) because I was chatting to someone during the morning assembly. The head teacher said it was nothing personal but he needed to make an example to the rest of the kids who had just started at that school.

I think corporal punishment helped to stop me breaking rules (when I knew I'd get consequences) but I hated the headmaster for the unjust beating. I guess if he'd beaten me a thousand times there would have been consequences... bad ones both for me and him.

I've never hit a child as an adult though and can't see any circumstances where I would.

I think he's much more likely to be institutionalized for the rest of his life.

Unfortunately, that's probably true. Arizona does a miserable job when it comes to protecting children and helping people with psychological issues.

I agree. When a young life is pushed beyond a certain point of acceptable behaviour it becomes hard to turn things around. The "system" tends to take over then and it's all down hill.

I'd say both.

Wow, I didn't know kids that young can get charged for a crime. I knew kids young as ten do but not at 8.

Premeditated murder is premeditated murder, no matter how old the perpetrator is.

Not necessarily true. I used to get a smack on the legs if I were naughty, but I understood why I was being smacked, as my parents told me why. I didn't like pain (still don't, at least, not "bad" pain ;) ), and so I learned my lesson quickly.

If you're getting smacked by a reasonable human being, there's probably a good reason why. He didn't get smacked for doing something really bad, and he knew that, which is why he hated his dad. And it's why a lot of abused children turn into hating adults.

Hurting a Child is not a good form of punishment. It's cruel. I can see why this poor child did this, (sort of) he got tired of the abuse and finally had enough. another link descriptuion about it says that there were no signs of "physical or sexual trauma" I think that being spanking is pretty traumatic.

First-Degree Murder is even more traumatic for the victim - none have ever recovered from it.

LOL. Yes, But I'd say abuse is worse. When you are abused you actually have to live, with it going on.

Abuse is easier, because you can recover from it (I have). Death by shotgun blast is usually permanent (the 8-year old kid's victims haven't). Judge the crime, not the criminal.

True. I would guess that all 8 year old kids are capable of murder depending on the circumstances. There are psychotic kids who could murder just for the hell of it, and others who are abused one way or another until they reach a breaking point and something has to give.

Thinking back to how I felt about my head teacher, if he had subjected me to significantly more (unearned) canings there would have been a breaking point when I would have premeditated something nasty to happen to him, and I don't just mean slashing his car tyres.

Everyone has a breaking point, even kids.

You *can* recover from it, but it doesn't mean that you *will*
