i remember seeing a documentary about the worst jobs in history.
hermit was mentioned. because basically richer people would hire people to go reflect on various issues alone in a cave or a tower or something for 7 years(apparently these places were quite cold and sometimes wet.). if they made to the end of the 7 years they would be paid a pension which was basically enough money to last the rest of their lives. but very few people made it to the end, apparently one was caught in a local drinking establishment. one lord told his hermit that he was not allowed to even talk to the servants that gave him food, another was told to pose like a thinker (like the statue) whenever someone went by.
i would not last that long. i would not even last 8 weeks.
the idea of being alone is appealing but i need things to keep me occupied like a high speed internet connection, maybe a nintendo DS and some games, electricity to power these things.
