The same happened with alcohol back in the day when it became illegal.

i love mexico. allready, from before. the country, the attitude, the stereotypes :D i love the drug wars too, the footage of mexican reporters hugging the ground in tijuana or whatever and "BOOM!! ! ratatatatatata KABAAAAM!" in the background, soldiers and helicopters in the background

*mexican hat dance*

and now, i love them even more. legalize! people are so lame, and theyll never realize how simple it is. everyone knows the solution. control drugs. tax them. maintain their quality.
decriminalization is a step, but it still doesnt preserve quality.

wooo-hooo as if tequilla wasn't reason enough to move to Mexico!

I really don't know why so many of them hop the border to US... I'd pack my bags and move to Mexico in no-time if I could!

the article mentions that it's legal to possess:

5 grams of marijuana
0.5 grams of cocaine
2 grams of opium
50 miligrams of heroine
0.015 milligrams of LSD
40 grams of methanfetamines
40 milligrams of MDA
40 milligrams of MDMA (extasis)

I do not have experience with opium, but those are quite modest "household" amounts.

5 grams of marijuana --> A decent joint
0.5 grams of cocaine --> Five lines
2 grams of opium --> ??? No idea
50 miligrams of heroine --> Medium sized slam
0.015 milligrams of LSD --> 1 to 3 trips (a trip consits of something between 40µg and 120 µg)
40 grams of methanfetamines --> I assume you mean 40 mg of Meth (a medium sized slam)
40 milligrams of MDA --> A 1/3 decent pill or medium slam
40 milligrams of MDMA --> A 1/3 decent pill or medium slam

I can just see it now! :o

Americans and other nationalities flooding into Mexico like there's no tommorow......and not enough border patrols. I foresee a puzzling and troubling time for Mexico....

Mexican "Senate" link from 2008 (before the change to marijuana from 2 grams to 5 grams)
http://www.senado.gob.mx/gace.php?sesio ... ocumento=4
it's the only table about halfway in the article.

I am unsure about the idea of allowing people to legally have drugs of abuse in small amounts, I worry about the public health problems which would be associated with widepread drug abuse.

I have a series of points which I think that the Mexicans would need to deal with.

1. If you buy from a street dealer then how do you know if you are getting 39 mg of heroin or 41 mg. I once saw in a pharmology text book a HPLC chromatogram of street heroin, it looked rather like a hedgehog (lots of peaks). How will the Mexicans deal with a case of a person who tried to buy 40 mg of heroin but ended up with 60 mg, I can see this happening becuase the amount of things that the heroin is cut with could varry from dealer to dealer and batch to batch.

2. Where are the drugs going to be bought from, who will set the price, purity and other standards associated with each one ?

Decriminalization is better than throwing people in prison, but you might as well make up your mind and make it fully legal. I'm staying in Canada, homegrown chronic is way better than some Mexican brick straight out of a truck.

Weighing in topic

Well, the cops had better get some of those teeny tiny pharmacy scales in order to measure the mass of those drugs! And how do you measure how much someone has ingested when he/she is caught in a traffic violation? :?

Obviously someone has to supply the stuff in order for it to be bought? How does the drug distributor sell his wares? Teeny tiny packages?

Shoplifters beware!! This store has surveillance cameras!

I would like to know if the Mexicans are going to up the penalty for dealing and the one for being caught with large amounts of drugs.

i think they got another KIND of concern than we have. search for "drug cartel war" footage, and youll find scenes fitting the iraq war, seriously, reporters hugging the ground, constant gunfire in the background, and armies of soldiers storming the area, battles raging for days and days

i cant think of a single country in the world where the drug problem has reached a stage like this, maybe except afghanistan and perhaps colombia.

its not a matter of fining stoners anymore, and mexico is having to realize this. they must think new.

For the most of the drugs a reasonable mg-scale will do (roughly £120/$150); but with the LSD I really do not have a clue how this could be measured with a laboratory.

For the measurement of LSD I would suggest HPLC, which would require the much of the drug sample to be dissolved in a solvent and then a known amount would have to be injected into the HPLC machine.

For the measurement of the amphetamines I think the most easy method would be gas chromatography. I think that the best way would be to take a sample of the solid, dissolve it in acidic water and filter it. Add an internal standard and some sodium hydroxide. I would then extract the drug into ether and then inject into the GC. This is not something that a cop can do in the street when he is trying to work out if he should bust someone.

The problem I see for the weights of everything other than the weed is that unless the Mexicans make it legal to sell via a normal pharmacy shop it will be impossible to control the purity of the drugs, for example if you have 40 mg of "heroin" how does anyone know how much of the 40 mg is heroin and how much is something else such as citric acid or sugar ?

For the those drugs of abuse which can be taken orally it might be possible to dispense them in the form of pills, but I doubt if any normal drug company would be willing to get involved in the supply of drugs of abuse such as MDMA. To my mind it is more likely to generate trouble for the company than even things such as the "abortion pill" (Mifepristone) so if I was in charge of a drug company I would refuse to get involved in the production and sale of drugs of abuse to the general public.
