The fault in your logic here is you assume there is only one way to develop autism. It's been proven that neurotoxins and autoimmune responses at a young age can cause autism. Mercury just happens to be a neurotoxin.
I'm not saying that the mercury in vaccines causes autism here, it doesn't. There was never enough thiomersal in the old vaccines to cause problems. It's also metabolised to ethylmercury which doesn't bioaccumulate. Methylmercury on the other hand does cause problems, and it has been known to bioaccumulate to deadly levels in fish.
It's possible that there's a small subpopulation that has an autoimmune response when they are given a vaccine. I personally don't think there is, but it might be worth looking at.
This doesn't excuse Jenny McCarthy though, children not being vaccinated causes much worse problems than 1 per 1000 kids developing autism. I still think she needs to be hauled in front of a judge and sentanced on manslaughter charges.
