For some reason the virus doesn't seem no where near as contagious outside of China which is a good thing the person to person infection that occurred in the US was from someone who was living in the same house as the infected person with constant exposure you would expect the disease to be transmitted.

At this point I don't think there is much to worry about unless you live in China

Interesting article from the Washington times
By Bill Gertz - The Washington Times - Friday, January 24, 2020

The deadly animal virus epidemic spreading globally may have originated in a Wuhan laboratory linked to China’s covert biological weapons program, according to an Israeli biological warfare expert.

Radio Free Asia this week rebroadcast a local Wuhan television report from 2015 showing China’s most advanced virus research laboratory known the Wuhan Institute of Virology, Radio Free Asia reported.

The laboratory is the only declared site in China capable of working with deadly viruses.
Dany Shoham, a former Israeli military intelligence officer who has studied Chinese bio warfare, said the institute is linked to Beijing’s covert biological weapons program.

“Certain laboratories in the institute have probably been engaged, in terms of research and development, in Chinese [biological weapons], at least collaterally, yet not as a principal facility of the Chinese BW alignment,” Mr. Shoham told The Washington Times.

Work on biological weapons is conducted as part of a dual civilian-military research and is “definitely covert,” he said in an email.

The Wuhan institute has studied coronaviruses in the past, including the including the strain that causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS, H5N1 influenza virus, Japanese encephalitis, and dengue. Researchers at the institute also studied the germ that causes anthrax – a biological agent once developed in Russia.

“Coronaviruses (particularly SARS) have been studied in the institute and are probably held therein,” he said. “SARS is included within the Chinese BW program, at large, and is dealt with in several pertinent facilities.”

Asked if the new coronavirus may have leaked, Mr. Shoham said: “In principle, outward virus infiltration might take place either as leakage or as an indoor unnoticed infection of a person that normally went out of the concerned facility. This could have been the case with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but so far there isn’t evidence or indication for such incident.”

Mr. Shoham, now with the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies at Bar Ilan University in Israel, said the virology institute is the only declared site in China known as P4 for Pathogen Level 4, a status indicating it uses the strictest safety standards to prevent the spread of the most dangerous and exotic microbes being studied.

The former Israeli military intelligence doctor also said suspicions were raised about the Wuhan Institute of Virology when a group of Chinese virologists working in Canada improperly sent samples to China of what he said were some of the deadliest viruses on earth, including the Ebola virus.

In a July article in the journal Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, Mr. Shoham said the Wuhan institute was one of four Chinese laboratories engaged in some aspects of the biological weapons development.

He identified the secure Wuhan National Biosafety Laboratory at the institute as engaged in research on the Ebola, Nipah, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever viruses.

The Wuhan virology institute is under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. But certain laboratories within it “have linkage with the PLA or BW-related elements within the Chinese defense establishment,” he said.

In 1993, China declared a second facility, the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products, as one of eight biological warfare research facilities covered by the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) which China joined in 1985.

The Wuhan Institute of Biological Products is a civilian facility but is linked to the Chinese defense establishment, and has been regarded to be involved in the Chinese BW program, Mr. Shoham said.

China’s vaccine against SARS is probably produced there.

“This means the SARS virus is held and propagated there, but it is not a new coronavirus, unless the wild type has been modified, which is not known and cannot be speculated at the moment,” he said.

The annual State Department report on arms treaty compliance stated last year that China engaged in activities that could support biological warfare.

“Information indicates that the People’s Republic of China engaged during the reporting period in biological activities with potential dual-use applications, which raises concerns regarding its compliance with the BWC,” the report said, adding that the United States suspects China failed to eliminate its biological warfare program as required by the treaty.

“The United States has compliance concerns with respect to Chinese military medical institutions’ toxin research and development because of the potential dual-use applications and their potential as a biological threat,” the report added.

The biosafety lab is located about 20 miles from the Hunan Seaford Market that reports from China say may have been origin point of the virus.

Although I originally discounted the idea that this coronavirus originated in a BioWeapons lab in Wuhan, China as a conspiracy theory. But I might take that back.

There is a research paper (Uncanny similarity of unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag) that claims just that. Basically the new coronavirus is the SARS virus with 4 inserts of HIV. That doesn't happen just by accident.

[We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses. Importantly, amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV-1]

This didn't MUTATE from an Animal to Human it was CONSTRUCTED and second, the Chinese knew this and started the HIV drugs to combat the illness.

This paper hasn't yet been peer-reviewed, so it should be taken with a grain of salt until review or corroboration occurs. Given that genetic sequencing info of the various strains has been widely distributed, I hope this can occur soon.

This article indicates the most likely cause of the present coronavirus is that the Chinese were researching a recombined virus made in a laboratory for the purpose of creating a vaccine and it escaped from the lab.

... Rawlings says that China’s history with mass epidemics has prepared them for the ongoing crisis in Wuhan. “In many ways China is ahead of the US and other nations when it comes to responding to mass infections, as they’ve been through this before with SARS in the early 2000s,” he says. “China can also have fewer bureaucratic restrictions when it comes to designing and constructing massive projects like this one, particularly when so much is on the line.”

I just don't see US capable of building emergency hospitals in 6 days. No country on the planet has enough negative-pressure rooms and beds to handle mass pandemics.

It seems like Donald Trump is the one panicking.

The virus is taking on pandemic proportions
https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/healt ... 3da1b8ee9a

Australia's international education and tourism industry are expected to take a massive financial hit

Earlier this week, Malik Peiris, chair in virology at the University of Hong Kong, said if it turned out that the new coronavirus could be spread by people who don’t show any symptoms, “a pandemic is a scenario that we have to consider”.
Professor Ramon Shaban of the University of Sydney and Western Sydney Local Health District told news.com.au that the coronavirus outbreak was already technically a pandemic.
“In technical terms it is a pandemic as there is the occurrence of multiple infections at multiple sites,” he said.
He noted that WHO’s declaration of a public health emergency was simply the contemporary language being used to describe a pandemic.

Since the old days when people were losing sleep over Saddam Hussein's alleged bio-weapons program there has been a lingering fear that eventually one day bio-terror would be a reality.

The question over whether the Chinese deliberately released a virus doesn't really make sense given ground zero is China (it's like detonating a nuclear weapon destroying your own people in the hope the nuclear fallout will weaken your enemies outside)

However there's always the possibility that elements within the Chinese secret intelligence community might be willing to release a virus under the guise of an "outbreak" to cause mayhem in the west?

Or it's possible the outbreak is due to lack of proper controls causing the virus to escape. But more likely the penchant for fried bat wings resulted in a zoonotic virus jumping from bats to humans.

Following the coronavirus outbreak Chinese families have been murdering their pets
https://www.news.com.au/world/asia/dogs ... b8cd44e41e

Apparently there is a myth that dogs and cats transmit the virus (which is totally false).

I just don't understand how you could develop a loving relationship with your dog or cat and then murder them in cold blood out of sheer ignorance/fear?

Something seriously wrong with this society

If you are looking for masks and you can't N95 or N100 masks because they are selling out look for P100 masks as they are first line as they block both Chemical and Organic

That is because the Chinese Health Commission is telling them they can transmit the virus blame the Commies

A Chinese epidemiologist warned this week that the novel Wuhan coronavirus is not limited to communication between humans.

Dr. Li Lanjuan of the Chinese National Health Commission made clear that mammals are generally at risk of passing the virus.

“If pets go out and have contact with an infected person, they have the chance to get infected. By then, pets need to be isolated. In addition to people, we should be careful with other mammals especially pets,” she told China Central Television (CCTV) Wednesday.

Chinese news outlets and the World Health Organization report that pet-to-person transmission remains theoretical as of now. The WHO declared an international emergency on Thursday.

This has yet to be peer-reviewed :

Quote:
We are currently witnessing a major epidemic caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019- nCoV). The evolution of 2019-nCoV remains elusive. We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein (S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses. Importantly, amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag. Interestingly, despite the inserts being discontinuous on the primary amino acid sequence, 3D-modelling of the 2019-nCoV suggests that they converge to constitute the receptor binding site. The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity /similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature. This work provides yet unknown insights on 2019-nCoV and sheds light on the evolution and pathogenicity of this virus with important implications for diagnosis of this virus.

In other news China now includes HIV-medication in their plan to treat those infected with the corona-virus :

Quote:
China is using AbbVie Inc’s HIV drugs as an ad-hoc treatment for pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus while the global search for a cure continues.

The Beijing branch of China’s National Health Commission said that a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, sold under the brand name Kaletra by AbbVie, is part of its latest treatment plan for patients infected by the virus, which has killed at least 56 people in China and sickened more than 2,000 worldwide.

The NHC said that while there is not yet any effective anti-viral drug, it recommends patients are given two lopinavir and ritonavir tablets twice a day and a dose of alpha-interpheron through nebulization twice daily.

This reminds me of something my countries government did during WWII: the people were told to offer up all the iron and steel from their properties (kitchen pans, fences and railings etc.) to provide materials to build spitfires...
However the material gathered was for the most part useless for this aim and ended up in landfill.
The point was to make frightened people feel they were constructively doing something that clearly and directly aided the situation.
Can’t know for sure, but it’s not impossible that the Beijing politburo and it’s relevant sub-commitees have adopted a similar strategy.

Something serious wrong with humans, you mean. That was probably why I included this drawing in my PhD thesis:

Image

The virus does bring out the worst in people. People are on the edge. I saw a video clip where people got into a fist fight in Wuhan, with someone knocked down to the ground and bleeding profusely. Also saw news about a group of Shanghainese in Japan refusing to board a plane with a dozen Wuhanese passengers. In another case, people nailed and blocked the doors of apartments, so to prevent residents from leaving their homes. Some villages resorted to building road blocks, and setting up armed guards (with knives) to prevent outsiders from getting in. I can fully understand each person's perspective. But it is still sad to see all that.

This is in fact what I am saying. I am talking about how situational factors associated with the alleged risks the virus poses can draw such responses in an otherwise civil society?. I am not suggesting this is somehow dispositional in Chinese people.

We already know people behave in an irrational manner when informed by people in authority anywhere in the world. I am only alluding to the signs that Chinese society has entered this phase.
