Racism exists, it's on all sides.

Have people of color had to fight tooth and nail for where they are? Yes! But they are THERE! They are in Congress, POTUS, Doctors, Lawyers, Educators, everywhere. They are proving everyday that they are some of the most capable minds.

I shouldn't need to remind anyone here that color isn't the only form of oppression though. It's often the most obvious so it's a default platform. I wish more than anything else that folks would dig deep, rather than shouting from the same soapboxes.

People of color are equal long before people with disabilities. And folks are growing tired of the same old SJW subjects... When folks begin to address all rejection, they will eventually resonate with everyone.

Yes, indeed, book burning were up many peoples' alleys for many centuries.

Many people other than Nazis.

The common thread in book burnings---is that they are negative and reactionary. And there is the desire to prevent free exchange of ideas (a salient feature of fascism).

Would you feel the same if they had a bonfire of Mein Kampf? Hiltler's 'fight' was a delusional one, but it was real to him. The people who burned this woman's book may feel her 'fight' is a delusional one, as most conservatives are for immigration, so long as it's legal. But, she feels it's real. How is this different?

They aren't burning the great works of American Literature. Or Confucius, or the Koran, or the scrolls...

Tell that to ordinary black Americans who feel they not only get second rate justice, but who feel their lives are not held in the same regard by officers of the law.

People these days act like it happened just few years ago and they're suffering PTSD from it. Hitler and nazis probably get talked about more now than 65 years ago.

I suppose you're talking about me. As a matter of fact, I laughed watching Hogan's Heroes, too.
If we talk about the Nazis more today than years ago, it's probably because our collective national consciousness and conscience has grown, allowing us to understand not just the evil of the Nazis, but of any and all racism and hate.

No hardly just you. So keep the nazis and racism thing going full throttle.

You seriously don't believe that our understanding and condemnation of racism and racial violence has grown among most Americans? That most Americans are just as racially prejudiced?

I understand some people seem to have a pathological obsession with it and seem to want to keep America stuck in the 60s/70s.

I understand some people want to deny that racism is real, unless it's "reverse racism" against whites.

And I understand some people (who ironically call themselves progressive) want to keep us back in the 60s/70s.

No, we just don't want to deny that not all Americans are equal in their own country, and that something must be done about it.

What's the something that must be done.

Bringing back those voters rights the supreme court decided there were no longer a need for would be a start. Urban renewal of inner cities, along with a return of job opportunities would be another. There's so much, but one thing for sure that's needed is expanding awareness among Americans of the harm done by racism. Changing hearts and minds.

It seems to me that instead of hearing that, I mostly hear that white conservatives are suprimisist nazis. And of course with that message being cranked out there have to be claims of ramant racism taking place. And I expect that to continue until the white house, senate, congress and scotus are run by the people they want in total control of everything.

I have never said all conservatives are white nationalists and racists, though every white racist seems to belong to the far right. It's those people who need to have their hearts and minds changed.
Do you count fighting to change racism to be liberals in "total control of everything?"

We must be vigilant in this.

We can not learn from history if we forget. Forgiveness for the holocaust is something I can't do but I won't criticize those that can.

We can not truly move on from the holocaust it will always be a major part of Jewish history. But it is just that history, we should not let it ruin our current lives. We should not see everything as the next Hitler.

I could agree with you if you included all mitigating factors. If two men (or women) are tucked safely in their homes at 1 am, one is white and one is black, as a rule what's going to happen? Nothing but sleep... If one runs the street, white or black, who has the greater chance of being arrested, getting shot, whatever? The one out running the streets, walking through neighbors where they do not live, etc... It looks like they are looking for trouble. I am fat, white, old... I promise you that if I went wandering around some random neighborhood that wasn't my own, someone would call the cops on me. My saving grace is I couldn't run if my life depended on it. So, I'd probably survive an encounter with the cops. A whipper snapper who wanders the streets, after dark, and then runs like hell or fights, looks suspicious. You NEVER mention circumstances surrounding cop shootings.

* this does not include recent circumstances like the white citizen from Australia who was shot by a black cop after calling for help, or the black citizen who was shot by a white cop in Texas after someone called for a welfare check. I am talking about people, all people with homes, who think wandering the streets is a fun pass time.

I never said “forgive” for the Holocaust. I said something in APOM’s spirit. Learning from history. Acknowledging history. But moving in. Going forward.

Does anybody recall that I said we shouldn’t burn “Mein Kampf,” either?

I'm not saying forgive the holocaust, but I think we need to forgive the germans...

We can’t blame most German people—past or present—for the Holocaust.

I agree, it's the same with the statues. It's an ugly part of our history, but it's true.

What upsets me is when a group of individuals latch on to a moment in time and act as though it's THE moment in time. The only moment in time. When the world has been full of Hitlers from the start, the only change was the ability to get the news out worldwide. Because they have a visual, they ignore all other history documenting the same exact thing happening elsewhere in history. When you do that, you get examples like this. People are so sick of having their own history glossed over, in favor of awfulizing another's in comparison.

Them: "oh, nobody had it as bad as X!"
Me: "oh yeah, tell that to X!"

Until we find a "dark night of the soul" we can all bond over, that's common to everyone, we're just spinning the wheels of history. And taking sides...

I am aware of many of the Genocides of history.

Tutsis, Hutus, Armenians, Bosnians, Africans on slave ships, many more.

Jews should not feel they have a monopoly on suffering. Though they did suffer through the Holocaust.

Anybody who denies the Holocaust has certainly not looked at the evidence for it.

I guess it's not unlike people in the American south who deny how horrible slavery really was.

Yep. And the evidence is quite available for any skeptics.

I agree that jews don't have a monopoly on suffering. I remember when there was a terrorist attack in Paris some years ago and some journalists were murdered, they blacked out the Eiffel Tower, even had special banners on Facebook profile pictures. I was teaching the Angolan ambassador's wife English, here in Israel, and we discussed how the entire western world mourns for a few Frenchmen when millions of Africans die annually with no acknowledgement whatsoever. It's a completely different standard. It's a very sobering thought. She is an awesome woman, a psychologist and a midwife.

I am perpetually reminded of the holocaust. Many personal family losses, my entire family in Poland with the exception of my grandfather who got to England in the 1890's. Survivors who are friends and acquaintances. There are still many who live in Israel. I also think of Armenia, a genocide too little discussed. The emphasis must be on promoting dialogue and tolerance.

That sort of thing bothers me too. Like whenever I hear about a bombing in the middle east and on the news they always acknowledge the Americans that were killed as if they were more important when there's always a lot more Middle Eastern people killed in these things.

The ethnocentrism of the US bothers me. :|

It's like that one episode of The Simpsons when Lisa read a plaque that said "On this battleground 400 Indians lost their lives, and 4 brave Americans lost their hats." Holmer responds with "Those poor hats..."

It was meant to be funny, but I think it's disturbing because that is America's general attitude towards horrible things like that.
