Most images coming out of China and many other countries show individuals wearing facemark. But a few (like the YouTube video above] also show individuals also wearing goggles. So does that make sense?

A quick search of the internet indicates this is a good idea.

While respiratory transmission is the most common mode of transmission for influenza virus and typically results in respiratory infections, researchers are emphasizing that respiratory exposure is just one of several potential routes of influenza virus infection in human beings. The surface of the eye is overlooked as a site of transmission, capable of leading to both ocular and respiratory infections. The ocular surface is a mucosal surface with permissive receptors for influenza virus, and the authors note that roughly 80% of documented human infections with H7 viruses have been associated with ocular complications such as conjunctivitis, often with concurrent mild respiratory illness, and influenza-positive eye swabs.

Then I remembered that I had a pair of goggles laying around the house and I dug them out.



These goggles are not ordinary goggles. If you notice they have numbers on each lens. That is because they are prescription goggles. I picked them up from a local scuba store a few years ago. I am almost blind as a bat and these goggles are similar to wearing a pair of glasses. So if I ever need to wear these for this type of threat, either the current one or the next one down the pike, at least I will not be stumbling around in the dark like Mr. Mago. As I recall they were not very expensive at the time and were much cheaper than a normal pair of glasses.

I suspect many people wear contacts lenses. One contamination threat is bringing your contaminated fingers to your eyes in removing or installing contact lenses.

open/subdermal wounds
nasal passages
oral passage

Covering your eye may reduce the transmission risk (especially in terms of inadvertently rubbing the eyes) but by no means prevent it.

It's interesting which illnesses are designated as "deadly". The flu kills many many people every year, but isn't headlined as a "deadly" disease. Malaria, ditto. People die from measles, from allergies, from all sorts of things. But "deadly" is very selectively applied.

But technically there have been deaths in China so it's deadly

We are in the twilight zone, or limbo.

The death in the Philippines is actually louder than Trump's restriction on travels. It shatters the idea that "wealthier equals healthier," that people that can afford to travel somehow have stronger resistance to the virus.

What all countries are asking now is: are the containment measures working? Right now there are just too few confirmed cases outside China, that we cannot draw a conclusion, yet. It still needs 5~6 days before anyone can say anything definite. It's a suspenseful time. If the people knowledgeable in the field are not saying anything, I think the rest of the population shouldn't do that, either.

Ooh! Having a memory: when I lived in West Yorkshire I knew two guys who swore blind that HIV was genetically engineered by the CIA to reduce the global black population... anyone else come across that particular oddball notion?
Is it more widespread and could this newborn coronavirus conspiracy theory be building on foundations laid by the older one?

The guy specificly says his degrees are in biology and finance I mentioned it was his opinion why it he thinks it could be. I will delete the post increase people don't take it as a opinion.

Numbers this morning 14,628 known infections with 14,451 of which are in China. Only 8 confirmed cases in the USA as of this morning. It is not the time to panic in the USA yet but I do recommend to go-ahead and buy some extra supplies if it is in your means to do so because if the virus does some how get started here people will panic buy and supplies will likely be hard to come by. I see this all the time in Hurricane ally even if a tropical storm is coming and you go to the grocery store and all of the bottle water and non perishable supplies are gone.
You don't want to be the guy or girl thst shows up to the empty grocery store.

So how is the world currently responding to the coronavirus threat?

The primary approach is containment. Many countries are closing borders with China and halting airline flights to and from the country. They are also setting up quarantine sites for those arriving that may have the virus. In the U.S. several military bases have been picked as possible quarantine sites including: Travis Air Force Base in Solano County and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego County in California, Lackland Air Force Base in Texas and the 168th Regiment Regional Training Institute in Colorado. Australia plans to use an island (Christmas Island) as a quarantine site. Japan is not forcibly quarantining arrivals, saying they lack the legal basis to confine people who have not tested positive for the virus. South Korea has proposed detaining them in a training center in isolation in Jincheon county. Canada is primarily focused on self reporting. At the moment Britain is using Arrowe Park hospital in Wirral as a quarantine site.

China is the hot spot, so the level of containment protocols are in full force. Generally people are the shelter-in-place approach for isolation. Transportation is severely curtailed - no buses, trains, cars.

One of the approaches the CDC is tracking is the development of coronavirus test kits. They appear to introduce these kits and protocols in the next couple weeks. These kits will be able to separate out those individuals infected with this coronavirus from the individuals infected the general flu.

It is interesting to look at the approaches other countries are employing to combat this coronavirus. India recommends homeopathy for coronavirus prevention. I personally would probably use essential oils. I experimented with a variety of essential oils over the past couple years and have developed a skill in developing various blends. One in particular which I have names "Superman" works very well for most influenzas.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection. But I wonder!! ! Most of the deaths due to the coronavirus were elderly patients. In one study, most patients were men, with a mean age of 55.5 years. 51% of the patients had chronic diseases, including cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, endocrine system disease, digestive system disease, respiratory system disease, malignant tumour, and nervous system disease. In other words their immune systems were breaking down, resulting in a variety of diseases or conditions. The coronavirus weakens the immune system that allows the patient to contract other bacterial contagions that then cause the deaths of the patients. The cited article even refers to the disease as coronavirus pneumonia. So although there is no vaccine to prevent 2019-nCoV infection, there are vaccines that fight pneumonia.

According to the CDC:
Pneumococcal Vaccines help prevent pneumococcal disease, which is any type of illness caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. There are two kinds of pneumococcal vaccines available in the United States:
* Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine or PCV13
* Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine or PPSV23

CDC recommends PCV13 for all children younger than 2 years old and people 2 years or older with certain medical conditions. Adults 65 years or older also can discuss and decide, with their clinician, to get PCV13.

CDC recommends PPSV23 for all adults 65 years or older, people 2 through 64 years old with certain medical conditions, and adults 19 through 64 years old who smoke cigarettes.

I am no expert in this field, just an observer, but it seems like if one was immunized against the pneumonia bacteria that one might catch the coronavirus, and be sick like Hell for awhile, but not get pneumonia and thereby survive to live another day.

Just one single case, but this is very good news. Remdesivir is the drug. Its effect can basically be seen in 1 day.

Roughly 99 percent of new cases have appeared in China with the vast majority of the cases in Hubei province and its provincial capital, Wuhan -- the epicenter of the virus.

The death toll from the virus has increased to 361 on Monday, with a total of 17,205 infected -- an increase of nearly 20 percent in the last 24 hours.

About 150 cases have been reported in at least 25 countries globally. There are now 11 confirmed cases in the U.S.
As of Monday morning, there are six in California, one in Arizona, one in Washington state, one in Massachusetts and two in Illinois.

Experts believe the highly transmissible coronavirus will become a pandemic as infected numbers continue to increase in China and countries around the world, according to a startling report. The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a global emergency. The U.S. declared the coronavirus a public health emergency on Friday with Trump signing an order barring entry to foreign nationals who recently were in China, other than the immediate family of American citizens and permanent residents.

The only individual outside of China that has died form this virus was a man in the Philippines. The 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan was hospitalized last week with a fever, cough and sore throat, and died after developing severe pneumonia. The male patient had been showing signs of improvement but deteriorated 24 hours before his death. So did he die from viral pneumonia or bacterial pneumonia? Viral pneumonia can most likely affect healthy people with strong immune systems. The individual in the Philippines was relatively young. But the information out of China is that most of the deaths are individuals that are elderly or have serious medical conditions. That fit the model for bacterial pneumonia - more likely to affect someone with a lowered immune system, or someone who is recovering from a respiratory infection. So did the coronavirus cause a weakening of the body's immune system that allowed him to become infected with bacterial pneumonia?

If this coronavirus produced the viral pneumonia then the entire worlds population is at risk and we have a situation like the Spanish Flu because it strikes the entire population equally. One of the trademarks of the Spanish Flu is it struck down young healthy men in their prime.

But if the coronavirus weakens the immune system allowing the patients to become infected with bacterial pneumonia, then the deaths will occur mainly in the very young and the very old and most of the population will be spared. If it is the latter case then individuals (especially those doctors, nurses, medical staff, ambulance staff) could be immunized against bacterial pneumonia and would be somewhat protected.
