I think what it boils down to is Putin fears that if Ukraine becomes unified with the West, it will threaten his personal power. I think Putin sees Russia as his regime, with him as its supreme perpetual ruler, rather than just being an elected president who's term as Russia's leader should have ended permanently in 2008. Simply put, he's a dictator who wants to keep his dictatorship going for the rest of his life. That's what's really at stake to him regarding Ukraine. If Putin was removed, the invasion would end. Provided his successor didn't have the same dictatorial asperations.

Agreed.

It should be clear to most that pootin is an egomaniac.
The way he humiliates his underlings in press conferences, for all to see that he is the alpha male in the room.
He is consumed by his self-importance.
And he wants to be seen in history that he was the one who reunited greater Russia once again.

I'm not sure about mentally ill. But he's obviously on a power trip, considering he's kept himself in power for over 20 years, and doesn't plan on relinquishing it during his lifetime.

There's an opinion he won't survive as a civilian.

Too late to try gracefully bowing out.

Exactly this has just quietly happened to Belarus.

You may not have used that exact word but your assessment of "Pootin" is plain as day. Psychopathy isn't mental illness in your book? Nor egoism to the point of war? There is an alternative to the propaganda: he is acting rationally, albeit desperately, against his country's real enemies and their attempt to neutralise his country. If you stop imbibing the news for a second and just think you will no longer need to invent some rabid, snarling Putin to explain his actions.

The "horrible threat" to Russia is thay they may definitely lose any ground for their imperial aspirations and become just another country.

Well, desperate moves like this one will just speed it up.

Yeah, just lay down and take a pounding, give up your security, your last line of defense, the last scrap of your ability to pursue your nation's interests. You ask things of Russia you would not tolerate yourself without a fight.

That happens when you think the only way to stay secure is by being the biggest bully on the playground.
Things like having friends over common goals probably never come to one's mind when their all world is about bullying or being bulllied.

You may not have used that exact word but your assessment of "Pootin" is plain as day. Psychopathy isn't a mental illness in your book?

Not in the sense of an actual mental illness which divorces a person from reality, no.
It is essentially an anti-social personality disorder with a dark side.
A Psychopath, in a nutshell, is someone who doesn't have a conscience.

Quote:
The terms “psychotic” and “psychopath” are used a lot in popular culture, sometimes interchangeably. But they refer to two different mental health problems, both of them serious.

If someone is psychotic (or has what doctors call psychosis), their mind is losing its grip on reality. A psychopath is someone who isn’t able to feel for others and may act in reckless and antisocial ways.

pootin is not "insane".
He is a kold-blooded, calculating psychopath, imo. 8)

Again, welcome to the real world, magz. It's cold and dark down here.

That is difficult to reconcile with his nationalism. Yeltsin better fits the description, he really didn't care what happened to his people.

It irritates me when I see people who have previously shown some spark of original thought chomp on the bait with such enthusiasm.

I'm sorry you never experienced healthy relations.

I made my own evaluation previously, and I stand by it, at this stage.
I assessed pootin to be a psychopath many years ago when he had his henchmen run around the world assassinating dissidents.
It was obvious to me that he revelled in his notoriety.

Had you considered that?
Obviously not.

You have such a low opinion of me.
Is it because you feel threatened by what others have said in response to your argument?
"Curious". 8)

And now the armchair psychologists direct their diagnostic super powers away from Putin towards me.
