May she rest in peace!

I find it very it very interesting how much the British people seems to care about her death.
I am sure that if our king died we would not have the same reaction. The queen in the UK must have had a bigger status than our king has.

Obviously, the UK resilience under the Blitz probably saved the war for the Allies.

She's always been there in the background like a mother. That's why it's such a shock her passing.

My parents are quite sad at her passing. She has been a constant in many older people's lives.

Just a point to anyone who has referred to her as the "Queen Of England". She was Queen of the whole United Kingdom, not just England. The British Crown came about when the King of Scotland inherited the crown of England.
The Queen's mother was Scottish and she died in her own personal residence of Balmoral which is in Scotland, not England. She will of course be greatly missed by those who admired and respected her in all 4 nations of the UK as well as the Commonwealth.

seriously?!

Never heard that. its crackers.

I demand the Normans apologise for shooting my king in the eye with a pointy stick!!

Yes it was a few years ago now that they did. I couldn't believe it myself tbh. Maybe it was a joke!

But Italy has been apologising to a lot of countries recently though e.g. Libya, Ethiopia. I didn't even know Italy was involved in those countries 8O

But hey, we can't say 'country X should apologise for invading country Y. But country A shouldn't apologise for invading country B.' That would be weird.

I think the paleolithic builders of stonehenge were completely wiped out by the bronze age Beaker people who were themselves sacked by the iron wielding celts.

Exactly! Countries invade countries, humans kill humans.

We all need to move forward and help those we've hurt, and try and make amends, instead of labelling countries as 'bad' because they invaded another.

Of course, I can't imagine the current UK government doing anything to help former British colonies, but maybe one day we'll get a nice government which does!

Also if you travelled in Europe after WW2 and for decades afterwards, Europeans are extremely grateful to Brits for defending them in that war. I suppose now time has passed, the older ones have died out, but I have many surprising memories of Europeans making a fuss of me and my family while on holiday there, simply because we are English and our ancestors helped theirs. I've heard of other people experiencing this too.

Yes I tend to take the big picture view that I would be "sprechen die deutch" had Churchill not overcome Hitler. I've posted before that the modern English don't appreciate their own struggles in their past and the antiquity of their culture and that's not just restricted the Britain. it includes the lands of Northern France all the way to north sea peoples of Scandinavia.

Hit the nail on the head there! No country is all bad or all good, no person is all bad or all good...

I expect if you met old Europeans they would like you too Cyberdad, as your Australian ancestors no doubt overcame the Nazis too.

What country are you in?

It's because Britain has been in a state of turmoil since 2016, but the Queen has been always in the background for the last 70 years, the last stable presence in our lives.

Now she's gone and we're thrown into yet another crisis of uncertainty.

To clarify Queen of England is equivalent to President of New York or Prime Minister of Ontario

Nope...not quite.

The President of the US and the Prime Minister of Canada have actual executive power. The Queen (or King) of the UK have very little actual executive power----but they are, at times, influential.

The equivalent would be the UK Prime Minister.

It's a colloquial term that probably goes back ages. I've mostly heard it used in sayings like "who do you think you are, the Queen of England?" Or someone boasts some title they have to get privileged treatment, and the response is "I don't care if you're the Queen of England".

In WWII most of the Australian contingent of troops were posted in South East Asia to fight the Japanese. Mnay men were captured and tortured at the hands of the Japanese. A lot of Australians died on the fields of France in WWI though. The grapevines on the Somme and Burgundy in France are fertilised with the blood of young Australian men.

I think what TwisterUprocker was trying to get across by the below is that there is no such title as "Queen Of England"
as England is only a part of the UK the same as New York is only a part of the USA etc
