What he should have said is that the autumnal equinox begins in Australia March 19/20. Here in the northern hemisphere we will be experiencing the vernal equinox. There is no such thing really as a "March equinox".

Or maybe it was you who said March equinox.

There was an interesting article published in the NYT last night:

American adults of all ages — not just those in their 70s, 80s and 90s — are being seriously sickened by the coronavirus, according to a report on nearly 2,500 of the first recorded cases in the United States.

The report, issued Wednesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found that — as in other countries — the oldest patients had the greatest likelihood of dying and of being hospitalized. But of the 508 patients known to have been hospitalized, 38 percent were notably younger — between 20 and 54. And nearly half of the 121 patients who were admitted to intensive care units were adults under 65, the C.D.C. reported.

“I think everyone should be paying attention to this,” said Stephen S. Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. “It’s not just going to be the elderly. There will be people age 20 and up. They do have to be careful, even if they think that they’re young and healthy.”

In the C.D.C. report, 20 percent of the hospitalized patients and 12 percent of the intensive care patients were between the ages of 20 and 44, basically spanning the millennial generation.

“Younger people may feel more confident about their ability to withstand a virus like this,” said Dr. Christopher Carlsten, head of respiratory medicine at the University of British Columbia. But, he said, “if that many younger people are being hospitalized, that means that there are a lot of young people in the community that are walking around with the infection.”

We'll know a lot more about this virus in the next month or so. I think the picture will become clearer as to why China moved to lock down whole cities over something that we were led to believe initially was "just a cold" or "less dangerous than the flu."

Also gets exposed to a lot more people all over the world, which is why I'm not surprised people like him and Hanks got it.

It depends on whom you ask. The term "The March Equinox" is used by astronomers and is easier to say than "The Vernal Equinox in the northern hemisphere and the Autumnal Equinox in the southern hemisphere". That's why I use the term (and "September Equinox", as well as "June Solstice" and "December Solstice"). It also requires less Politically Correctness.

We'll know a lot more about this virus in the next month or so. I think the picture will become clearer as to why China moved to lock down whole cities over something that we were led to believe initially was "just a cold" or "less dangerous than the flu."


Might as well ask why China sells wild animal meals on street corners. They do things differently there. Statically in China's case covid-19 probably was less dangerous than the flu. Since up to 60,000 people die of the flu in America, I can only imagine what the numbers are in a country of 1.5 billion.

Another tip :

If you foresee your city going into shutdown, do all your online shopping and business now. All the Supermarket/pharmacy sites are down here because the net is overloaded.

New York state has a population of nearly 20 million people.
Greece has a population of around 10 million or half the number of people.
New York now has more than 4,000 reported cases of the virus.
Greece has one tenth of that number of cases.

What is New York's plan to mitigate an explosion of new cases? What if New York state ends up with numbers like Italy or Iran? I'm getting concerned that New York might become an extreme hotbed of this virus.

In Mild Condition: 30,692 (92%)

Serious or Critical: 2,498 (8%)
----------------------------------

So those two are the worst of the bunch?


I can not get the same stats for New York alone but for the US it is

Active Cases: 11,069

In Mild Condition: 11,005 (99%)

Serious or Critical: 64 (1%)
