I fear they're devolving backward.
In what sense? Why is it devolving to expect equality in effort and work ethic? You equate 'pay' with equality, but are fine with claiming that not everyone can perform up to certain standards (but should experience pay equality, none the less). You want equal pay as a participation trophy, of sorts. And that's not the way it works. Workers receive a base salary, commission and raises are seen as incentive to perform better.
What you term evolving, I see as completely irrational. I'm sure a 36 hour worker (or less) would love to make enough money to kick back for the rest of the week. Wouldn't we all. There shouldn't be an incentive to be the least that you can be. Incentives exist to 'out' the over achiever or the one willing to bust their hump. Don't you think it's even the slightest bit weird to scream, "I can't do it, but I deserve to be paid the same as the ones who can?!" Wait, but you just said, we're all equal. "We are only equal in our right to be paid more! We should get a pass for being 'low energy.'
I wonder how you'd feel if the cop you call for assistance was 'low energy.' Or what about the bank teller who posts your paycheck? "I'm sorry sir, but expect a 2 day longer than usual delay because I'm 'low energy.'
This is why 'righties' don't listen to you. You want maximum pay for minimum qualifications and energy expenditure. The battle cry for these 'equality' driven lefties should be, "alright everyone, work slower. No need to set yourselves apart, we're all equals here."
Take it from me...a society that strives to live by Darwinian principles of "survival of the fittest" might be espousing the perfect virtues of rugged individualism (so cherished by you and Ezra) but also seems to underpin the ethos of hunger games or virtual reality games like "Big Brother" where only the strongest get to enjoy the spoils and the rest suffer the humiliation of consolation of life as wage slaves. This is actually ethically and morally indefensible and evidently contradicts the christian ethos of the founding fathers.
Am interesting side story was at the time of signing the declaration of independence, an inalienable declaration was made in the American constitution that;
"All men are born free and equal, and have certain natural, essential, and unalienable rights; among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; that of acquiring, possessing, and protecting property; in fine, that of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness".
The founding fathers were made aware this declaration was incompatible with slavery but Before final approval, Congress, having made a few alterations to some of the wording, also deleted nearly a fourth of the draft, including a passage criticizing the slave trade. At that time many members of Congress, including Jefferson, owned slaves, which clearly factored into their decision to delete the controversial "anti-slavery" passage. Jefferson believed adding such a passage would dissolve the independence movement. Jefferson, decades before the Declaration of Independence, argued in court for the abolition of a slave. The court dismissed the case outright. In writing the declaration, Jefferson believed the phrase "all men are created equal" to be self-evident, and would ultimately resolve slavery. In 1776, abolitionist Thomas Day wrote: "If there be an object truly ridiculous in nature, it is an American patriot, signing resolutions of independency with the one hand, and with the other brandishing a whip over his affrighted slaves."
I pick on Jefferson who was a paedophile and a liar but Washington was also a crook. In order to get around the rule that slaves must be offered their freedom after 6 months of service in the state of Virginia he moved the slaves across state lines and reregistered them as slaves before bringing them back to Virginia,
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-ne ... 180954283/
So it's a fact that both Jefferson and Washington the founding fathers of the US were also criminals in their own country.
This therefore taints the constitution. We have similar problems in Australia where both the architect of our constitution and our first prime minster were also dishonest men.
You're free to leave the job you feel does not pay you enough, how is that slavery? If you feel you are not paid enough in minimum wage jobs, you are free to improve/enhance your qualifications/skills. That's not slavery. There's room for improvement, but you would rather stay the same yourself and complain that nothing changes.
Let me tell you a secret: if nothing changes, nothing changes.
You now have all the laws backing your claim that slavery is wrong. The laws changed, why haven't you taken advantage of them?

Drone as in part of a hive. That pretty much applies to any organization political or religious that one has fully committed themselves to ideologically. The ability to accept that what one believes might be wrong does not exist. And anything the hive puts out is accepted without question.

That is all a lot of palaver for do not want to make an effort but get the same benefits as those who do. I don't deserve these slave wages. I deserve to have what the person who worked at establishing a career has. Good number of people who make big bucks also work long hours. But hell no don't want to do that. Just give me the benefits because I deserve equality. I am entitled dammit.
You know my feelings don't come from conservatives. They come from being a fighter. I have almost died a couple of times, but I fought my way through it. They said I would never walk or talk or do anything except eat and crap myself. I overheard them because they thought I was too out to lunch to understand. I did not have to go through grueling physical, occupational and speech therapy. I could have stayed right were I was at. But I fought to achieve and I got results. No, I said I want workers to be able to make enough to realize something of the American dream, and to be able to buy more goods and services in order to spur the economy on.
I don't recall ever using the term, "low energy."

The majority of employees would vehemently disagree with you. No brainer.
Wage fixation is a safety net to protect families from scrupulous business owners.
I do not see what that has to do with the statement. There is a shop in town that I go to. I know who the owner is. If I got a job there, I would know that the owner did not set up his shop for me. I would know he set it up for himself. For himself to make money. That is the no brainer.
Workers are supposed to become second class citizens, without their concerns or livelihood taken into account?
In most cases people are what they make of themselves.
No, what you posted is just how the right justifies inequality.
There is no such thing as equality. If there was we would all be like drones. That is why the left gets compared to the Borg. The dream of everyone being an indistinguishable clone under the control of the government.
I mean are you saying you should be equal to Stephen King? That it is unfair that he sells more books and makes more money than you?
I guess all the money authors make should go into a mutual pool run by the government and distributed equally. That way the most unpopular author can make the same money as the most celebrated one. That would get the 1% carrying everyone else and what a wonderful world it would be.
The constitution, which our American ideology is based on, clearly proclaims all people as equals (granted, it wasn't put into practice at the time, but we've since been moving in that direction). We are all of equal worth, and are equal under the law. The right has never been supportive of this or any form of equality, preferring hierarchical societies, whether they be based on a labor/management model, or race, or class. To be against equality is to be against the American ideal.
Yes we are all to be treated equally as far as human life and the law goes. We are not all equal as far as our abilities and willingness to apply ourselves goes. It sounds like you are saying we are all supposed to be viewed as equal along those lines. As in you should be viewed as equal with Stephen King and publishers should pay you in a comparable fashion.
No, I'm clearly talking about equality as human beings of the same worth, and as well as under the law. It's this very concept that the right has always been in opposition to. Hence claims on the right that equality has to be earned - no it doesn't.
I am clearly talking about business, jobs and wages. And you are deflecting.
Yes, jobs and wages in a society where we are all of equal worth.

auntblabby used 'not enough energy' as a reason why not everyone could accomplish a living without assistance. I've experienced 'low energy' when depressed, but I didn't drop anchor there.
The American Dream isn't an entitlement, it's a 'state of being' to strive for. How can anyone claim to be 'striving' for anything when all they do is stay in the same place?

"Fool everyone?" That's kinda dismissive and condescending... What I heard was that he overheard his 'naysayers' and refused to listen. Then, proceeded to work his butt off to achieve a goal, in the face of overwhleming odds. That is what I consider a fighting American spirit.

Yeah I fooled everyone by striving hard and making sacrifices to achieve.
It is kind of a 'rags to riches' story.
What you seem to want is rags to riches without striving and making sacrifices.
Those who strive and make sacrifices to achieve are supposed to play fairy godmother to those don't.
People who work hard and are able to overcome obstacles and achieve what they want in life are commendable (no argument there). Plenty of self-made people who are good role models.
What I am trying to justify is a financial safety net for those who are unable to achieve what people refer to as the dream (you might refer to it as the American dream) to live independently.
As Kraichie mentioned everyone is entitled to a minimum standard of living or quality of life. It is the socially responsible thing to do. It is irresponsible to try and pass judgement on those unable to survive without welfare. There are those who face glass ceilings and can't feel they can overcome these for whatever reason. We have a collective responsibility for these people.

The people who make your food do bust their backsides, but get little in return for it. I never said people should get riches for little effort. What I was getting at was that employers should quit paying workers for as little as possible for maximum work.
Incidentally, people on the stock exchange get rich just by moving money around, not by genuine hard work. Why don't I hear conservatives complain about that?

This therefore taints the constitution. We have similar problems in Australia where both the architect of our constitution and our first prime minster were also dishonest men.
I am not making a speech about what a hero I am. I just know from personal experience if you want something you have to work for it. You have to earn it.
Well, I'm glad you were able to fool everyone and come out on top.
"Fool everyone?" That's kinda dismissive and condescending... What I heard was that he overheard his 'naysayers' and refused to listen. Then, proceeded to work his butt off to achieve a goal, in the face of overwhleming odds. That is what I consider a fighting American spirit.
Not at all. I was sincere in my praise.

If you're against income inequality, then embrace capitalism.
Because capitalists take their production to the lowest cost places on the planet.
Thus, raising up the poorest people on the planet.

In theory. In theory, communism was supposed to work, too.
