Did I ever say I'm okay with people in other places in the world suffering? I wish I could help North Koreans and Uyghurs and Tibetans and many others but I'm also aware that being away from them, their history and other contexts, I may gravely misjudge the situation.
What makes this particular war important to me is the fact that it's affecting people I personally know and creates a situation where I can be the next. It's not a face on a journalist's photo for me. It's my neighbour, flesh and blood.
Does the Polish government plan to help Ukraine?
It is already helping within its current capability. Remember, Poland is a part of NATO, so we cannot send troops to Ukraine without sparking a global scale conflict. However, Poland sends in humanitarian aid, convoys with weapons and ammo and takes in refugees. All people who flee from Ukraine are taken in and taken care of. A lot of us engage in help directly, i.e. my co-worker has organised a passage from the border to Wroclaw for his friend's family. He is not alone, as a lot of people help refugees get to their families and friends living within our borders. People are gathering clothes, hygiene products and food and pass it to units coordinating aid both within our borders and in Ukraine. People sign-up to take Ukrainian refugees into their homes. A lot of us make donations which go directly to Ukrainian army budget, hopefully allowing it to resist for longer.
Usually I do not think fondly of my country, but today I am proud of Poles. Direct military action is off the table, but we are doing as much as we can.
