Monuments to racism toppling around the world.
You seem to be under the impression that BLM isn't supportive of indigenous groups and their struggles. What gave you this false impression?
The NAACP support the use of BIPOC (Black and indigenous peoples of colour). It recognises indigenous minorities are in the same boat in terms of police harassment, incarceration and poorer quality of life outcomes.

In the US it's further complicated by the fact that there are peoples (like the Lumbee, or like the descendents of slaves owned by the Cherokee) who are both black and indigenous.
I hope lostonearth35 understands she's just trotting out a canard used to create the impression of tension between black and indigenous communities where none actually exists.

Just a reminder: under international law, an occupying power has no right of self-defense, and those who are occupied have the right and duty to liberate themselves by any means possible.
I was fascinated to learn that J Edgar Hoover (the arch villain in civil rights struggle) secretly hid his slave and native ancestry (I think even Elvis Presley and Heather Lockyer (of all people) have both as well)
But yes I take your point, The African American community struggle to find allies in any community due to historic injustices (I think Asian, Native and latina communities used to enthusiastically enforce jim crow laws).

I'd imagine that with indigenous peoples it would matter nation to nation. Some groups would have no historic interactions to speak of, some like the Cherokee have a rather horrible history to address and others have more positive histories.
When I said peoples I wasn't referring to individual people but instead groups like the Lumbee who are a native tribe who have some black ancestry which led to them being denied recognition as a native group for some period before that was resolved.

Yes I see. Although how well this historic injustice toward the Lumbee is known in the Native and African American community is questionable.
Do native people think that having black ancestry disqualifies membership of the "nation"? curious
I think Asian (east and south) have similar prejudice against "blasians" but have no problem with "eurasians"

It would likely vary between nations. I've never heard any sort of anti-black racism from family members, but it might have been different if I had of visited Odenak with my ex or if we had of had kids. I don't believe a band that is fairly open to accepting band members with mix ancestry could make a case to discriminate against some mixed people and not others based on their ancestry.

I think it's a highly under researched area, cultural bias relating to colourism.
I suspect native people in north American are no different to anywhere else in having bias against darker skin. Depending also on how different tribal groups are exposed to white American values might predict how accepting they would be to accept Elizabeth Warren Vs let's say Jimi hendrix into their tribe.

I dunno.

Disclaimer: We do Not have a large black population here - Toronto has Most of Canada’s black population.
Anyways, from my limited observations, blacks & Indigenous people mix quite well socially. I’d guess that’s because they share something in common: being mistreated by white people.
It’s like a black friend from the beach said one time.. when dark skinned people see one another there’s a nod/acknowledgement of one another even if they’ve never met before to indicate “Yeah, brother, I see you. I get you. We all experience the same thing.” And that sort of camaraderie is observable between blacks and Indigenous people here.
An Indigenous friend (from the beach) who passed away this year told me it was similar in Brazil, that the darker skinned people there accepted him and looked at him like he was one of them kinda whereas white tourists have a potentially more.. hostile reception by the more “raw,” people there. Because he was darker skinned (and a world champion BJJ fighter) he never felt threatened there. (Actually, he loved it there - said it was awesome. Just raw and real because people there will Take what you have if they want it - kinda primal, no nonsense kind of society.)

I'd be very surprised if any tribe would accept Warren, just because her 'quantum' is below the threshold pretty much any nation uses. The ones that don't care about quantum usually insist on being able to prove the chain of relatives, and since her ancestry is Cherokee they will never accept her given their own fairly strict definitions.

Not sure why a post I responded to goldfish got deleted? am I touching on a taboo topic?
Colourism is a real phenomena and while there are public shows of support for BLM from across the "colorline" (to quote Michael Jackson) I think within communities there is a unconscious hierarchy based on how closely you resemble a caucasian phenotype.

There certainly is. Some cultures bleach their skin lighter or use makeup to appear lighter. I’ve also noticed people taking pics in certain lighting or using black and white filters to make their skin appear lighter on dating/hookup apps.
Others stay out of the sun - but that’s more about suntan vs not. In some places a tan means you’re poor because you have to work outdoors and pale skin means you’re wealthy and don’t have to work the fields.
Then there’s being an actual white guy.. like not just existing as one, but professionally. I read that the Chinese have a job called “face,” where they hire a white guy who’s role it is to be the company’s white guy spokesperson. They attend meetings and events and things as a representative for the company because it’s more impressive for them to have a white guy out front. Bonus if the candidate actually knows something about business, but their main role is just to show up well dressed and be white. Believe it or not, that was part of my role working for a friends family business here part time. They’re Indo-Canadian. My friend told me his dad liked when I was around when he had industry rep people swinging by because it gave him more respect and legitimacy dealing with them - simply because it made him look good having a white gig working there. I understood it but I thought it was kinda funny because the man is a multi millionaire and can easily stand on his own two feet in business negotiations.. yet, still, he felt more empowered when I was there to “face,” as the Chinese call it.
