Emergence of a Deadly Coronavirus
Here’s why the death toll is higher in Italy:
https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2020/03/21/818971466/despite-lockdown-italys-coronavirus-cases-continue-dramatic-climb
It’s not that the rules aren’t strict enough, it’s that people are Constantly breaking them.

Can someone in the US find out what emergency social services and assistance are available for her in California? Isn't California in lockdown now? I started a thread in the haven.
All help appreciated, I can do nothing as I don't know the american system.
Kitty4670 has started a thread in the Haven too so you can give her information there or PM her. I know this is a news thread but my post is Corona related and urgent and you are all here.
Thanks Teach...this is a constructive use of the forum. Lets hope somebody can assist.
I’ve been thinking of carrying a pack of baby wipes with me whenever I’m out of the house so I can quickly clean my hands after touching anything without my gloves on.
Maybe we should all consider this? ...
^ just became mandatory here in Australia
Ezra's points are:
(1) There is no need for containment measures, just let the virus propagate freely
(2) The mortality rate will automatically be much lower, probably no worse than a regular flu
(3) Hospitals are overcrowded because of people catching common cold/flu
(4) Economy is shattered because of people overreacting, not because of the virus
I'm afraid the aforementioned has a fan club here on WP who don't take kindly to NTs who dare point out facts
Not bad today under the circumstances
Please avoid fast food outlets serving uncooked fresh salads. Two subway workers over here contracted COVID-19
Thanks for the update.
You seem to have missed my earlier questions to you? Your choice I guess...
If you check the WHO site people wearing masks need to follow strict protocols
https://www.who.int/emergencies/disease ... -use-masks
In addition it's If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection. or wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
This means the Chinese visitors who transmitted the virus initially were the ones responsible for not following these rules when they bought the virus to western countries whom you now seem to be ridiculing.
The second point to wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing is a good reason to avoid a person wearing a mask.
Note that most deaths occur during flu season. On average, flu season lasts about 13 weeks (3.25 months).
So that is as many as 646,000 deaths in 3 months.
We do not have herd immunity to help fight this virus which is spreading quickly because people are spreading it unknowingly because of their careless flippant behavior. The precautions are there to slow the spread so it doesn't overload our infrastructure and break down supply lines. If supply breaks down it only compounds the problem and now have much larger problems than covid-19. You end up with civil unrest which only spreads the virus further because again, we do not have herd immunity because it is not the flu. Things are going to get much worse before they get better, just wait till we see the ramification of spring breakers going home and spreading it further to places it may not have spread to without that boost. See where this is going?
Immunity from what? So far this thing has been just like the flu as far as how it affects people. The vast majority of people who get it have mild symptoms. For the most part the only people who it affects seriously are the same people who are seriously affected by a strain of influenza. If it spreads that means that the vast majority people will build up an immunity to it. Then again how many people are immune to other viruses that produce similar symptoms?
People may experience:
cough
fever
tiredness
difficulty breathing (severe cases)
How is that any different from the flu?
Not bad today under the circumstances

No problem
That’s a high hospitalization rate. Are these considered “mild” cases?
What percentage of the younger people are hospitalized? People under 50?
Based on a little research, it seems higher than what we might think.
It still is said, throughout the Internet, that older, immunocompromised people with preexistent conditions are most vulnerable to being in serious condition.
CDC says that in past years there have been up to 810,000 hospitalizations for the flu in the US.
In the US right now for serious cases we are at:

March 18th it was:

I am having a hard time finding anything saying how many people have been hospitalized.
The best info I have found is:
About 80% of deaths and 45% of hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the U.S. are among adults aged 65 or older, with the risk of serious illness and death increasing with age, according to a report released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The findings are similar to data from China, the agency said. While severe COVID-19 illness leading to hospitalization can occur at any age, children appear to have milder illness, with almost no hospitalizations for those under age 19, CDC said. According to the report, an estimated 21% to 31% of U.S. COVID-19 patients between Feb. 12 and March 16 were hospitalized, with 5% to 12% admitted to an intensive care unit. An estimated 1.8% to 3.4% of U.S. COVID-19 patients died over the period.
So I thought I would look at how Italy and other countries in the EU were treating their coronavirus patients. I stumbled across a document that does just that. Here is a link:
INTERIM CLINICAL GUIDANCE FOR PATIENTS SUSPECTED OF/CONFIRMED WITH COVID-19 IN BELGIUM
The document describes the recommended medical treatments for Belgium and also includes those for Italy (Lombardia protocol), France, Netherlands and Switzerland.
The Belgians are recommending using chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine.
For confirmed COVID-19 individuals with Mild to Moderate Disease (no oxygen requirement/no evidence of pneumonia), they recommend "Consider start Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil) if no contra-indication."
"If no hydroxychloroquine available, consider chloroquine."
The latests update of this document 19 March 2020 includes the following addition:
"Results of Gautret’ study have been just released and confirm that viral positivity in respiratory secretions (measured by PCR) is significantly decreased at day 6 in hydroxychloroquine-treated COVID-19 patients (n=26) versus those with supportive care (n=16 controls): 30% positivity versus 87.5%, p<0.001). This observation strongly supports the current choice of hydroxychloroquine as first-line treatment; we suggest to keep the current recommended dosage (see Table), which is pharmacologically very close to that used in Gautret’s study. Of note, in a small subgroup (n=6) of COVID patients incidentally treated with azithromycin for suspected bacterial superinfection, a more pronounced viral suppression was observed, but this observation is still too preliminary to recommend systematic administration of both drugs concomitantly, taking into account some significant risks of interaction[15]"
One of the other interesting pieces of information in this document is who is considered to be in the high risk group. That was defined in this document:
Age >65 years and/or underlying end organ dysfunction (lung, heart, liver,...), diabetes, coronaropathy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), arterial hypertension.

They cancelled nursing for us at my request. The nurse today left as per protocol as our state is worsening esp eldest kid's....
and they can't risk it without proper safety attire (gowns masks etc) .
The agency was to send normal nursing still just with the above gear but I don't feel comfortable with that unless we can secure a test first.
I don't want those ppl to somehow carry it and spread it to other vulnerable clients plus my refusal proved to her I am serious about needing a test.
She said she is contacting them to prioritize as this kid's health is too fragile to risk anything. He has already had bacterial pneumonia and hospitalized every time he had flu.
Even if its nothing but flu it can reach a critical stage as seen in the past
