Joe90 - It will not be as bad as the black plague. Nowhere even close. Every year many people get infected with the common flu and they survive. Last year winter flu season resulted in approximately 35,520,883 individuals in the U.S. contracting the influenza according to the CDC. This particular coronavirus is just more deadlier.

"More deadlier". Sounds scary. I'm so scared. I'm more anxious about what I do if I feel a cold or flu coming on. Do I have to be tested for it to make the public aware that there could be another person with it in the UK, or do I stay at home and rest/isolate myself? I'm sure the virus spreads more from people being tested for it in order to broadcast another case to the public.
Will I die if I get this? Or will I have to be isolated in a hospital room for a month? My mum's a cancer patient, does that mean she will die if she gets this virus? My boyfriend is a heavy smoker and has a bad cough and breathlessness, does that mean he will die if he gets it? I'm not just worrying about myself, I'm worrying about my family. One can wash their hands and decontaminate door-handles, but that doesn't stop you from breathing it in or catching the virus while you're out.

And if that does kill anyone I love, I will want to blast China off the face of the Earth.

And yes, I think you’re right about the media coverage: it’s disproportionate to the threat level to us.
(I adopted that approach as a blanket rule after I spent several months thinking that the ‘08 banking crash was the fall of civilisation: they’re jumpy night-watchmen with a product to sell)

Unless you’ve come in contact with a person who has been in China recently , it’s extremely unlikely that your cold and flu would be caused by the Wuhan Coronavirus.

Sorry to say, but I doubt that's true. The number of reported global cases is currently over 60,000, and the majority (48,206) are in Hubei. The CDC has also warned that the actual number of infected people is far higher than the reported number.

I should have said the rate of NEW cases has gone down.

According to the Washington Post and New York Times.

They are also saying that the epidemic might be done with by April.

I would be scared of getting it but the odds of that happening are a zillion to 1. Outside of mainland China only 2 people have died from it. 1 in Hong Kong and 1 in the Philippines.

Many of those who have died from it probably had extenuating circumstances which made them more susceptible.

One has to remember that a billion people live in China. If 100,000 people there get it, that is still just a small fraction of the population.

Even if you are in China the odds of you getting it are slim.

Ha! You obviously have no experience dealing with numerical data provided by the Chinese government.

From 45k confirmed cases, it jumped overnight to nearly 60k cases. It's pure magic.

US has 327 million people and 400 negative-pressure isolation-room beds, whereas Taiwan with its 24 million people (roughly 7% of the US population size) actually has 1,100 beds ... more than the US ... almost three times as many. As I have said, this is just for pure entertainment.

Bingo. The reporting is getting better. You can be sure that the reporting will get better and better, and that's the scary part: how many times will it get better before we get the real numbers?

But if it's a pandemic shouldn't a similar spread be happening elsewhere in the world?

With this virus, you have to learn to be patient before making comments.

Indonesia has zero cases. Upon inquiry, they then admitted: testing is just too expensive, so they don't do it. Ha ha.

Incubation can take up to 20 days with this virus. Many people have extremely mild symptoms or no symptoms, at all. So, my advice to everyone is, as I have said 2 days ago, wait another week (meaning wait another 5 days from now), before you make any comments about pandemic or not pandemic. (According to the strict definition of pandemic, it already is. But of course, plan B has not been triggered, yet, outside China.)

But they said wait 5-10 days back in the middle of January. It's now the middle of Feb. With international travel surely the numbers overseas should have skyrocketed like back in China??
