I can only hope it does not go that far and they lift lockdowns sooner than later. It was supposed to be for two weeks for the incubation period which made sense. Not it's like "could be months". I think their nuts. I think there's an insanity virus affecting the people calling the shots.

If people react so badly, I can't explain it in any other way than that your society has been already in a deep crisis.

For those figures? No it's just stuff I browsed through. I just wanted to see if things had already been written about that kind of stuff pre covid. React that way to unemployment? Well a person's whole life can be destroyed by it. Leads to depression and hopelessness. As for the rest, people in total destitution die faster.

I can't find any data from last months, the number 46,000 is current yearly suicides in the US (over unemployment and everything else, from the last years, before the lockdown).
Do you have any post-lockdown data?

We already have this crisis going on. Imagine the exponential growth of that. What's that going to do for the spread of a virus? Endless homeless tent camps. They should start running homeless numbers alongside covid numbers.

It certainly won't make things better.
But exponential growth of homelessness would mean exponential growth of abandoned houses... and thus drop of cost of houses... which would be something you apparently need. BTW, I find this scenario likely only to very limited extent.

Cuomo Cancels All Non-Critical Elective Surgeries in New York

Quote:
On Sunday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced all non-critical elective surgeries will be canceled starting Wednesday. This will free up 25 to 35 percent of the existing hospital beds. The state is also getting creative to produce more supplies.

On Sunday, Cuomo confirmed over 4,812 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the statewide total to 15,168 confirmed cases.

According to Cuomo, New York State has roughly 15 times more confirmed coronavirus cases than any other state. There are now 15,168 confirmed cases in New York. Washington, which is second in confirmed cases, has 1,647.

Cuomo also bashed a number of New Yorkers who were out in parks on Saturday.

"I don't know what they are not understanding. This isn't life as unusual. This is disrespectable to other people," Cuomo said during a press conference on Sunday.

Cuomo said New York City must develop a plan to correct the number of people hanging out in parks. He wants a plan in 24 hours and said there should be no group activity in parks

People aged 18 to 49 make up 53 percent of the confirmed cases in the state, according to Cuomo on Sunday.

"Young people can get it. You will get sick. You probably won't die, but you can give the virus to someone else who could day," Cuomo said.

Cuomo and the Army Corps of Engineers identified four sites for temporary hospitals, including one in Westchester County. However, as of now, they have no staff and no supplies. Officials are searching the world to find medical supplies. They have identified two million N95 masks. Ventilators are being collected from all facilities and 6,000 additional ventilators have been purchased.

However, price gouging is becoming a major issue. Masks that used to cost 85 cents now cost $7, according to Cuomo.

"If we don't get the equipment, we will lose lives that we could have saved," Cuomo said.

Cuomo is calling on the Federal Government to nationalize the medical supply chain, to help produce medical supplies, stop price gouging and send money to New York residents as well as New York State.

"New York received no funding from the first federal coronavirus bill," Cuomo said. "Even though New York has the greatest need. This is no time for politics."

On Friday, all barbershops, hair salons, tattoo or piercing parlors, nail salons, hair removal services and related personal care services were closed.

They are going to be using closed college campuses as hospitals.

I am hoping it will be limited too. Maybe this talk of a months long shutdown is for the sake of preparing people for the worst, if the worst happens with the virus itself.

This is in New Orleans:

Quote:
I spoke to a respiratory therapist there, whose job is to ensure that patients are breathing well. He works in a medium-sized city hospital’s intensive care unit. (We are withholding his name and employer, as he fears retaliation.) Before the virus came to New Orleans, his days were pretty relaxed, nebulizing patients with asthma, adjusting oxygen tubes that run through the nose or, in the most severe cases, setting up and managing ventilators. His patients were usually older, with chronic health conditions and bad lungs.

Since last week, he’s been running ventilators for the sickest COVID-19 patients. Many are relatively young, in their 40s and 50s, and have minimal, if any, preexisting conditions in their charts. He is overwhelmed, stunned by the manifestation of the infection, both its speed and intensity. The ICU where he works has essentially become a coronavirus unit. He estimates that his hospital has admitted dozens of confirmed or presumptive coronavirus patients. About a third have ended up on ventilators.

His hospital had not prepared for this volume before the virus first appeared. One physician had tried to raise alarms, asking about negative pressure rooms and ventilators. Most staff concluded that he was overreacting. “They thought the media was overhyping it,” the respiratory therapist told me. “In retrospect, he was right to be concerned.”

He spoke to me by phone on Thursday about why, exactly, he has been so alarmed. His account has been condensed and edited for clarity.

“Reading about it in the news, I knew it was going to be bad, but we deal with the flu every year so I was thinking: Well, it’s probably not that much worse than the flu. But seeing patients with COVID-19 completely changed my perspective, and it’s a lot more frightening.”

“I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. I’m seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like they’ve been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all.”

“We have an observation unit in the hospital, and we have been admitting patients that had tested positive or are presumptive positive — these are patients that had been in contact with people who were positive. We go and check vitals on patients every four hours, and some are on a continuous cardiac monitor, so we see that their heart rate has a sudden increase or decrease, or someone goes in and sees that the patient is struggling to breathe or is unresponsive. That seems to be what happens to a lot of these patients: They suddenly become unresponsive or go into respiratory failure.”

Quote:
“With our coronavirus patients, once they’re on ventilators, most need about the highest settings that we can do. About 90% oxygen, and 16 of PEEP, positive end-expiratory pressure, which keeps the lung inflated. This is nearly as high as I’ve ever seen. The level we’re at means we are running out of options.

“In my experience, this severity of ARDS is usually more typical of someone who has a near drowning experience — they have a bunch of dirty water in their lungs — or people who inhale caustic gas. Especially for it to have such an acute onset like that. I’ve never seen a microorganism or an infectious process cause such acute damage to the lungs so rapidly. That was what really shocked me.”

“It first struck me how different it was when I saw my first coronavirus patient go bad. I was like, Holy s**t, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube and out of his mouth. The ventilator should have been doing the work of breathing but he was still gasping for air, moving his mouth, moving his body, struggling. We had to restrain him. With all the coronavirus patients, we’ve had to restrain them. They really hyperventilate, really struggle to breathe. When you’re in that mindstate of struggling to breathe and delirious with fever, you don’t know when someone is trying to help you, so you’ll try to rip the breathing tube out because you feel it is choking you, but you are drowning.

Looking at other sources, it appears viral load is a very important determinant of how things will progress. (That is, how many of the viruses you have.)

These are quite affecting stories, Benificii.

It’s true that most people will get a mild illness from this. But there seems to be more people in serious condition than the statistics show.
