It’s happening here too. People going to the coast, the coast is mostly old retired people. Some coast towns have banned people who don’t live there. Most cities in my state along with all health agencies and hospitals are calling for a lockdown.

Some coronavirus patients feel better before getting really sick, doctors say

Quote:
Some coronavirus patients start feeling like they’re on the mend before becoming severely ill, according to doctors on the frontlines.

Dr. Ken Lyn-Kew, who works at National Jewish Health in Denver, said that patients’ symptoms sometimes appear to subside before their health takes a turn for the worse, NBC News reported.

“That’s what we’re seeing with these patients who get a lot worse,” Lyn-Kew told the outlet. “They’re doing OK, and then all of a sudden they’re really fatigued, a lot more shorter of breath and having chest pains.”

He attributed the dramatic turns to the body trying to determine whether it can take on the bug.

“It seems like there’s a period of time where the body is trying to sort out whether it can beat this or not,” Lyn-Kew said.

Dr. Joshua Denson, who is at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans, said he sees between 10 and 20 patients a day with the virus and has observed a similar pattern.

The COVID-19 cases start off with the patients experiencing mild symptoms — slight cough, headache, fever — before their health begins to deteriorate, he said.

“Patients tend to have symptoms for about a week before either getting better, or getting really sick,” Denson told NBC News.

Antidotally I have seen several videos from people who have had multiple instances of thinking they are getting better before getting really sick again. IMHO when all is said and done permanent lung damage is going to be the greatest lasting effect. I would not handle shortness of breath well. If something goes “down the wrong pipe” I panic which is the exact opposite of what you are supposed to do. That goes away in a few minutes. I don’t know how I would handle extended or permanent shortness of breath.

China exonerates doctor who warned of impending coronavirus outbreak
Quote:
China has exonerated a doctor who was officially reprimanded for warning about the coronavirus outbreak and later died of the disease, a startling admission of error by the ruling Communist Party that generally bodes no challenges to its authority.

The party’s top disciplinary body said the police force in Wuhan had revoked its admonishment of Dr. Li Wenliang that had included a threat of arrest.

It also said a “solemn apology” had been issued to Li’s family and that two police officers, identified only by their surnames, had been issued “disciplinary punishments” for the original handling of the matter.

In death, Li became the face of simmering anger at the ruling Communist Party’s controls over information and complaints that officials lie about or hide disease outbreaks, industrial accidents, natural disasters and financial frauds, while punishing whistleblowers and independent journalists.

Of course ... the people on disability get screwed, and those who ignore the rules by continuing to work get extra pay.

The UK is a little island compared to the US. Our major cities are near the coast. Back in the day ports were very important for commerce. So it's just day trips people are taking, but it's still too many people.

In Italy and Spain the beaches are closed. There were police with megaphones on Spanish beaches telling people to go home. I think it's the same in France. You get fined if you are found to be out and about with no reason in France.

Has Italy Stopped Treating the Elderly in the COVID-19 Pandemic?
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/italy-elderly-coronavirus/

The answer basically is: yes, if the healthcare workers deem that their facilities are overwhelmed. There is a reason why there are so many deaths in Italy. They simply cannot afford to treat some of the older people anymore. Their infrastructure is overwhelmed. The doubling period (for the number of deaths) is now around 4 days.

I'm slowly improving but it still causes a bit trouble. Sometimes I was nearly OK and then it got worse again. It's not a big thing but I hate if anykind of a cold lasts more then just few days.

That's what you get for not wearing a mask

You'll get it either at work, in shops or anywhere else where people are. Better to have it now then at a time where there aren't any free places in hospitals anymore in case that you need one like in Italy already. The devil takes the hindmost.

No doubt we'll all be arguing about how the crisis should have been handled long into the future. I for one am hardly surprised that the crowds haven't been turned away.

Sen. Rand Paul Reveals He Has Coronavirus

Quote:
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) announced Sunday that he has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, which he has downplayed.

“He is feeling fine and is in quarantine,” an announcement on his Twitter said. “He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events.”

It added, “He expects to be back in the Senate after his quarantine period ends and will continue to work for the people of Kentucky at this difficult time.”

Paul, a physician who has a Kentucky-issued medical license, was the only senator to vote against an $8.3 billion emergency coronavirus package last month. He also was one of the eight senators who voted against paid sick leave in a stimulus bill that passed with an overwhelming 90-8 vote last week.

“I think that the paid sick leave is an incentive for businesses to actually let go employees and will make unemployment worse,” Paul told Newsweek.

Paul is the first senator to test positive for the novel coronavirus. Two other members of congress, Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Ben McAdams (D-UT), have also gone public with positive test results.

On March 2, Paul appeared on Fox News and downplayed the global threat of the coronavirus.

“While it is worldwide, I think there is room for optimism that this thing may plateau out in a few weeks and not be as bad it as it may have been portrayed,” he said to host Neil Cavuto.

Seriously, this whole thing can be over by the summertime if people would just follow the social distancing rules. It's just a few weeks of your life. Then everything can return to normal. But they're too impatient and they keep breaking the rules.

It's very difficult for people to maintain such distancing for so long, especially those who aren't on the spectrum. It makes them feel trapped, even with social media or whatever other entertainment they may have.

That's because this is unprecedented in our age - it was 102 years since another big pandemic and hardly anyone from that time is still with us.

Even though we are in lockdown (voluntary senior citizen quarantine), my wife was very busy yesterday. She is an excellent seamstress. Apparently the call went out that they were in need of face mask. Not the N95s but the ordinary kind. So she busied herself and fabricated a hundred of them and then drove them to town and dropped them off.

Hurray for Jimmys' wife!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! :!: :!: :!: :!:

I was thinking that maybe I should give her a hand. I began to think that maybe there was a better material she could use. So I began to search around and fell down another rabbit hole.

I am not a fan of face mask, of people walking down the street wearing face mask because they cannot filter out microscopic viruses. But they have a place. In nursing homes and hospitals both patients and health care providers should wear them. When an infected person coughs or sneezes, these masks prevent the virus infected particles from traveling far. I believe in N95 face mask because they are designed to filter out these small particle. In my personal opinion everyone who comes in close contact with other person during this pandemic should be wearing them. But nobody except a handful of preppers came into this somewhat prepared. They were quickly sold out even before the virus hit the shores of the U.S. But there is something even better than N95s. These are the RespoKare Anti-Viral Mask. They carry an OUK rating from the FDA. These mask not only filter out the viruses but they also kill them deader than a doornail. The masks have 4 layers and one of the middle layers is a metal salt impregnated material. This layer kills greater than 99.99% of similar coronaviruses that land on them within a minute. So I thought to myself, I would like to get my hands on some of that type of material.

So in my search I came across an article about 2 Israeli companies trying to manufacture some of this type material.

Two Israeli companies are rushing to complete development of facemasks that could be vital prevention tools in epidemics like Wuhan coronavirus.

Because there is no vaccine or treatment for 2019-nCoV, personal protective equipment is an important way to combat the transmission of the virus and avoid a pandemic.

Disposable facemasks cannot block all pathogens and do not kill them. A used and discarded mask can even become a vector for disease as the pathogens multiply in its fibers.

That’s why washable, reusable masks with anti-pathogen properties could provide a potent prevention tool against the 2019-nCoV and other coronaviruses that have evolved into more severe illnesses, such as SARS and MERS.

Sonovia’s ultrasonic fabric-finishing technology, invented by two Bar-Ilan University chemistry professors, mechanically infuses antiviral, antimicrobial zinc and copper oxide nanoparticles into textiles for facemasks and other protective products.

Tests have shown that Sonovia’s treated textiles work against six types of bacteria including E. coli and Staph. Effectiveness lasts for up to 100 washes at 75°C (167°F) or 65 washes at 92°C (197°F).

The impregnated polyester-cotton fabric has been shown effective against some strains of influenza. It has not been tested for effectiveness against the current coronavirus.

There is another Israeli company called Argaman which is producing a Bio-block facemark.

Jerusalem-based Argaman is nearing commercialization of a reusable, washable, breathable antiviral facemask called Bio-Block.

According to founder and CEO Jeff Gabbay, a textile engineer with a background in pathology and infectious diseases, Bio-Block is a layered mask.

It’s made from a proprietary cotton embedded with accelerated copper oxide particles, and a nanofiber textile that blocks pathogens.

“The pores of the nanofiber pad are so small that bacteria cannot go through it — nor a droplet that contains a live virus –and our EPA-approved 100% CottonX fibers destroy the pathogens that come in contact with it,” Gabbay says.

“The mask not only blocks the virus but kills the viruses going both to the wearer and away from the wearer in case the wearer is infected,” he explains.

An independent lab found that CottonX remains effective against Staph and E. coli bacteria for 50 industrial washings or 100 home washings.

A hospital test sponsored by the US Centers for Disease Control found that CottonX bedding and gowns in the ICU reduced multi-drug resistant pathogens by 50%. This study is soon to be published, says Gabbay.

Like the Sonovia textile, CottonX has not been tested for effectiveness against the 2019-nCoV coronavirus.

The first 20,000 Bio-Block masks are in production in Argaman’s Jerusalem facility and will retail for about $50. They will be available in about two months.

Source: New antiviral masks from Israel may help stop deadly coronavirus

I thought that would be the material I would like to buy for DIY (do it yourself) face mask construction. Since the article was published on 28 January, almost 2 months ago, I thought maybe some of their material might have it the market. So I search Amazon. No luck! But I did stumble upon another interesting material for sale. One that has been around for many years. It is called Silver Cloth.

Silver cloth is a fabric material used to prevent tarnish on sterling silver and silverplate items while they are in storage. According to the Society of American Silversmiths website, tarnish occurs when sulfur compounds in the atmosphere, principally hydrogen sulfide, chemically react with the silver. Other common sources of sulfur compounds include wool, felt, gasoline, motor oil, latex gloves or carpet padding, and certain foods such as eggs, onions and mayonnaise.

Silver cloth is impregnated with microscopic particles of silver or zinc. The metal particles in the cloth attract and absorb sulfur compounds before they can reach the silver item being stored. Silver cloth is a flannel-like fabric. Silver cloth will stay effective for about 20 years before it becomes saturated. The fabric goes through the Kenizing process which gives the fabric it's anti-tarnish properties.

One of the processes for manufacturing silver cloth is the Kenized process, which is the brand name of the chemical process. This process embeds the fabric with flakes of silver, but also flakes of other metals such as copper and brass. The fabric maintains its anti tarnish qualities so long as it is not washed.

Anyways it sounds like an interesting fabric for a DIY face mask. So I bought a couple yards of the material and will beg and plead with my wife to make one for me so I can experiment with it. And if after wearing it for several days, I find it does me no harm, she can use the rest of the material to fabricate extra face masks and give them away to those in need.
