They said to wait 5-10 days to see whether the virus gets into other countries, which it did.

Now it's waiting another week to see whether there is community infection. Which is already a reality in Singapore and Hong Kong. Japan and Germany are on the borderline (and the Europeans were the ones that very much were against wearing facial masks in public ... well, now they learn, don't they?).

Haven't you read about the MWC cancellation? If everything is so much under control, why did all the big tech companies (Intel, Amazon, NVIDIA, Sony, Ericsson, etc.) pull out of the conference in Barcelona, Spain?

Do you know Santa Clara County, the heart of Silicon Valley, declared public health emergency?

We are basically waiting to see
(1) whether there are more (community) infection cases in Japan and Europe
(2) whether US has (community) infection cases

Be patient. And listen to the experts. You don't know what is going on. You don't have all the information. They do.

The individual far away from China should not be too worried about contracting that particular strain. But should be extra careful regarding all viruses going around during cold and flu season. Influenza in general can become serious to the point of being life threatening. There is a difference between prudence and panic.

Nations should take extra precautions regarding the Wuhan coronavirus and be prepared for it.

As for those with trumpitis, there is no course of action he could take that would be acceptable.

I mean that it is a good idea to be wary and take extra precautions to try avoiding contracting a virus this time of year. It is something that should be taken seriously.

However being panicked about it and having knots in your stomach is not going to help you any. Anxiety and panic is probably going to lower your immune system and put you at greater risk.

Since when do you get serious about viruses? I thought your specialty was to talk about seagulls crapping and vampires.

I was using humor to tell Kip there was no reason for him to be in a state of anxiety over moving to the Seattle area where I live.

The one person I know of in Washington state who has/had the Wuhan coronavirus is/was at the Providence medical center close enough to see from my house.

Are you saying I should be in a state of fear and panic over that?

Well with the huge numbers of people dying from it and the way it is making its way to other countries and the way the media is scaremongering the entire world, isn't it natural to panic?

So you are a 57 year old PhD who instad of going after a 71 year old scientist like jimmy m or an intellectual in his 60s like Fnord, you instead choose to focus all your energy on browbeating a significantly autistic learning disabled teenager.

I haven't seen one single person panicking in this forum. I have seen a lot of prudence, and then some mockeries.

You could have chosen to have a civil discussion with me in order to set me straight. That would have been far more productive.

I don’t see a reason for panic.

If I were in Hubei Province, I would probably be more concerned.

Not one case of this strain has been confirmed in NYC, which has FIVE Chinatowns.

I feel like the people and government of Wuhan have responded well, building full hospitals in 10 days, and just being vigilant.

I believe a corner has been turned.

Throughout this whole situation, only two deaths have been reported outside Mainland China.

There is more mortality with this strain than with most flu strains. But, like the other flu strains, most mortality is among people with already compromised immune systems. Though there is more mortality among healthy people in Hubei Province.

Not exactly a global pandemic. We took the proper precautions, I believe. Hubei Province will think otherwise, obviously. Were I in the epicenter, I would think otherwise, too.

Unless one in “western” countries was in close contact with a person who lives in Mainland China, and who traveled abroad within the past 45 days or so—or if a person from non-Chinese areas traveled to China, and came back to his/her resident nation, there is extremely little chance of one in “western” countries acquiring the virus.

The chances increase if that person is from Hubei Province and Wuhan.

The people in the main Chinatown of NYC don’t seem too concerned.
